For 'serious' track use where I'd want the fastest lap times possible I'd want PDK. Quicker changes and both hands on the wheel at all times.
Quite curious....unless you are actually racing, why would you want the fastest lap time possible?

Manual or PDK - tis an interesting dilemma and actually a real painful one come box ticking should you get a purchase slot. I too was defiantly one for a manual car, driver interaction and so on. However - just calling the GT3 box a 'PDK' I believe is doing it a disservice. The 'combination' of THAT pdk box and that engine as a complete system is one of the true greats of the modern automotive world.

Simply casting it to one side as a PlayStation experience is very much missing the point. No doubt they will improve it further in the new car as they did with the RS and I believe the number of people who tick PDK will be surprisingly high. Myself included, in theory the manual is attractive but the combination of the drive train and PDK would most likely get my tick come that day.

I'd want to challenge myself.

What about the challenge of the manual gearbox?

FWIW, had I been offered a build slot, I still don't know which gearbox option I would have chosen.

Your idea of a 'challenge' is interesting I have to say. I'd have thought the challenge would be to produce the best time you could with the car concerned (which would apply whether manual or dual clutch) and not to simply pick the faster option due to technology.

Do it seriously and go racing in whatever. To have 10 or however many other cars right up your chuff will guarantee you'll get the fastest lap manual or pdk. A lot more enjoyable than track days IMHO.

In Race conditions ( especially at night in a 24 hour ) it is nice to have paddel shift , as can adjust quickly , when in close proximity to other cars . Track days are 8 tenths in jeans with no Hans .... with maybe passengers and novices around ...nice to stir a box ....
Just Bought a 01 GT3 RS ..... last manual GT race car Porsche made .... great fun ..

Fair enough, I get that. Merely just interested why, especially as if it's for 'the challenge' as you say, buying a faster car or using a more advanced bit of tech gets you faster with very little extra from you.....

Hi
Of course. Interesting to see if it's worth changing
Mind you my current GT3 is tucked up being detailed
Would love the new GT3 RS but don't think I've much of a chance
And as for a GT2RS ...

All began with BMW Alpina offering tickets to see the new B4S ..
Do like the Alpina cars

Interesting discussion as I tracked my 7.1 GT3 and also track my PDK Boxster GTS (and manual 993 C2 Cab for that matter). It's not a direct comparison clearly as the GT3 and 981 are very different cars aside from gearbox. But they're both very enjoyable on track. Ultimately the the GT3 was more exciting/fun , but most of that "more fun" was due to the chassis, rear engined-ness and engine. Manual is very fun don't get me wrong, but once you can heel and toe competently and aren't after ultimate lap times, much of that particular manual gear change challenge is gone. Ironically, I think that having a manual gear change for the road is much more important for fun and the changes seem to be much more nuanced and variable (so in many ways more difficult) than on track (i.e. not always max attack/efficiency/speed).

In terms of my BGTS on track, there's something very satisfying about the inherent balance of it, it feels clinical but in a good way, and somehow the PDK seems to suit it for that reason. I feel like the Boxster is showing me that I might be able to master it at some point and egging me on, whereas the GT3 was intermittently giving me a big well done when I got it right but scolding me when I didn't. The immediate highs in the GT3 were brilliant, but there's no denying that the more consistent messages from the BGTS for an enthusiastic amateur like me are also very enchanting.

And as for the 993, well, it's the slowest by a massive margin, the most difficult to drive with no safety net for when you f*ck up, and the biggest handful by a country mile, but in terms of feeling like "you've tamed the beast", it's the winner of all 3 right up until you have a proper brown trouser moment at which point you're silently and unashamedly wishing you had modern tech to save you. Still mega fun and that's after I took the PSS10s off it and made it more useable (again). And best of all it's the most involving and, in good weather etc, enjoyable of the 3 on the road as well now that it's back to being sensibly sprung. Guess that's why the old girl has lasted 4 years and counting, which is coming on for double the time any other sports/super car has lasted in my ownership!

My 9934s is my favourite
By a long way
It's not fast off the mark
It's a bit heavy
But it has personality by the bucket load
One car I would never sell and I've had it for 16 years

Little off topic to the Manual/PDK/993 discussion,

When will they announce the arrival of the car? Will it be in the next few days leading up to Geneva a la 812 Superduperfast or is it just launched when the covers are off day 1 at the show and the marketing bumph goes out at the same time?

Ref release dates I understand that the "halo" cars are being offered by invitation only

Clearly they are trying to prevent people buying and flipping
