Porsche PSE Button
Discussion
Well that's not what the PorscheTechnician said at Porsche Tonbridge main dealers, guess he could have got it wrong but would be surprised working in a main dealers he didn't know! my gen1 2S has the factory fitted sports exhaust and works in the exact way the Porsche Tech guy described. As soon as I replaced the broken solenoid. When I start the car, light is off and the exhaust is loud, press the button and the light comes on, exhaust is then muffled.
Understood. Only can speak from my experience. Had a lot of pork but the relevant ones I have had are 997.1 C2S with PSE, 997.1 C4S with PSE and 997.2 GTS. Pretty sure the all default to quiet when started and need button press to go loud. To me the manufacturers logic is to switch on your sports exhaust rather then press a button for quiet mode after starting. Great if yours works the other way around as I always hit the button to go loud just after starting anyway. Good luck either way.
Thanks, to be fair It really makes no sense the way it works.
Given the fact you have owned a few 911's so real experience of using a PSE I investigated further.....
So now even more confused, should have read manual , hadn't even considered that, so manual states exhaust system is ON when button is pressed so perhaps Porsche man didn't know what he was talking about but odd mine does work in this way, maybe previous owner had it switched so it was reversed, guess that's possible, I had told the Technicion how my PSE worked so maybe just agreed mine was working fine!
I bought the car from Redline Racing in Harrogate, amazing dealership btw, will give Rob, the owner, a call to see what he thinks.
I had cancelled diagnostics check, looks like I unfortunately need to get that booked in to check if working or not, as this is my first 911, only other Porsche was a Cayenne, I am not sure what I am expecting to hear in terms of a difference between loud & quiet, since replacing solenoid exhaust is much louder but still not a big difference between loud & quiet, no idea how big the difference should be.
Appreciate all the feedback thus far!

Difference on gen 1 should be significant even when idling. You can also double check by placing your hand close to the inner pipes with the exhaust switched on you will feel the gasses from all 4 pipes, switched off only the outer 2 pipes will be active (pretty sure it's that way around). If this isn't the case you may have a stuck valve in the exhaust itself. Make sure you don't touch the metal of the exhaust tip after a hard run as they get rather hot and will burn!
997.1 had two versions of sports exhaust; depending on model year:
Model year '05:
The diode in the “Sport” button lights up: sports exhaust system is active.
The diode in the “Double tailpipe” button lights up: sports exhaust system is not active.
The diode also flashes in the “Double tailpipe” button to indicate the regulating status of the flaps in the rear silencers.
From model year '06:
The diode in the “Sport” (I-no. 639/640) and “Double tailpipe” buttons lights up: sports exhaust system is active.
