I have a fairly lengthy daily commute from Stratford on Avon to West Bromwich. It generally takes just under one hour, but can be somewhat variable due to regular traffic congestion over 6 miles from J4 northwards (it moves, albeit slowly).

In April they are going to start roadworks between J2 and J1 which is going to restrict the motorway to ONE LANEmad in each direction for 18 months!!!!

The impact of this doesn't bear thinking about. I foresee gridlock in the area, probably all day never mind for a couple of hours either side of rush hour.

I'm at a loss about what to do, I could try to take the train but that means a daily cost of around £35 on tickets/parking and I'd need to buy another car to leave at work (since I need to go out from the office regularly to visit clients). Plus the door to door time is going to be considerable.......I'll have no home life.......

Maybe a motorbike (I have a full test) but I don't relish the thought of filtering through all that traffic - I can foresee frustrated motorists taking exception to that and being awkward / dangerous to motorcyclists.

Find an alternative route has surely got to be the answer.Got to be more than one way to get there even if it does take a bit longer. Or have a break for 18 months or move to West Bromwich or change jobs.

A search on the Highways England website brings up planned works, not sure about the 1 Lane though.

I don't think I'll bother going Cornwall or Devon for a while

Indeed - neither of those say anything like "18mo of 1 lane".

To minimise disruption to customers, we will carry out this work predominantly at night under various lane closures, with some isolated weekend closures of the slip roads at junctions 1 and 2. In addition to the lane closures, we will also put in place a temporary speed limit through the work as it would not be safe to run the national speed limit through narrow lanes. We will also need limited weekend overnight closures of the motorway from junction 1 to 2. During each full closure, we will put a fully signed diversion routes in place.

Bosses said traffic management during the works was still being finalised.

Operating three narrow lanes of traffic is one option being explored.

M5 J1-2 Oldbury viaduct: preparatory work

We need to carry out essential work to repair the waterproofing between M5 junctions 1-2. This will ensure that people continue to have safe and reliable journeys on this section of the M5.

We have started preparatory work at this section to help us prepare for the main scheme, which will start after Easter 2017.

We started some preliminary work in December 2016, consisting of site investigations and surveys, to assess the extent of the preparatory work needed. As part of the preparatory work we will carry out resurfacing, replacement of bridge expansion joints and improvements to drainage.

To minimise disruption to customers, we will carry out this work predominantly at night under various lane closures, with some isolated weekend closures of the slip roads at junctions 1 and 2. In addition to the lane closures, we will also put in place a temporary speed limit through the work as it would not be safe to run the national speed limit through narrow lanes. suggests that lane closure won't be day time...

It was a different Express and Star article - information on that online article seems to have changed since I last read it

If they keep 3 lanes open it may not be as catastrophic as I am imagining.

Thank goodness, I often travel through this area travelling from Cumbria to Gloucestershire.

Still quite often come off at M6 J10 and divert westwards.

At least they seem to have finished on the M5 between Bristol and Gloucester, after many years of doing not a lot.......

They're still at it between junctions four to six, in its fifth year now (various works), this last lot was due to be finished last October.

Like the OP, I too am dreading the jnc 1 to 2 stuff, they just tell porkies, they will close what lanes they want, when they want, even close it all day if they screw up.

On the 4 to 6 stuff they have even put temporary speed limits on the A38 due to residents moaning that traffic dares to use "their" road (the main A38 non the less) when the HA shuts the motorway.

Narrow lanes without restricting HGVs to lane one, so the tts hit each other whilst tailgating cars that are trying to stick to the 50 MPH limit.

Why does this ste take so long ?
Why don't they work 24/7 on one section, get that finished, then start on another ?

You mean shut whole sections of motorway 24/7 for months ? That would be popularyikes I doubt the contractors could muster the qualified staff and supply lines to do 24/7

...and also the minor detail of having to let concrete, sealants, whatever cure before the next work can be done.

I live in the arse hole of the world near Wolverhampton.

Black country route, Birmingham new Road and the M6 all have roadworks.

It truly is appalling trying to get out.

I go m6 (northbound) then m5 (come off at junction 1) to go to work each day.

I'll be getting into work earlier and leaving earlier to avoid as much as this as possible.

Simple. 45 minutes train from Stratford to Snow Hill, change onto the Metro for 15 minutes to West Brom. A season ticket monthly pass etc will cut the cost down considerably. Consider Brompton folding bike if working any distance from centre of West Brom as can be taken on the tram, West Brom is a very cycle friendly part of the Midlands.
