Cayman 987.....
Discussion
I currently run a Vauxhall VXR8 which i've owned for 4 years, but i'm considering selling it to buy a Porsche Cayman to be used as a fun weekend car to drive. Having read all the buying guides that go into great detail about the well known IMS problems, would i be right in thinking that a 2010 second generation model such as a 2.9 car would more or less had these issues bred out of them - or are there still other issues to take into account when thinking about buying one these? Thanks in advance.
Having recently bought a Gen 2 S, a few things I would check depending on year and mileage, a new clutch is approx £900 (non OEM) and mine had to be replaced at 58,000 miles, also see if condensers have been done as if not they probably will soon. I have also just replaced worn lower rear coffin arms and am in the process of upgrading to GT3 master cylinder to deal with the slightly mushy brake pedal.
So far enjoying mine, if it were for road use only the revvy nature of 2.9 might well be the way to go but extra mid range shove of 3.4 is nice too, especially for the odd track day.

I think the clutch cost depends where you are in the country. I paid £600 all in at a specialist. What is a pain is the flywheel for the gen 2 is an OPC supply part only at circa £850, and that was with a discount plus then it needs to be fitted. Unneeded to change both at 50,000 miles. The Gen 1 flywheel can be found for circa £200 from various sources. I searched high and low for an OEM gen 2 flywheeel from resellers but I guess Porsche still have an embargo on that part. I replaced all front suspension components bar the shocks at 50k too, only needed one coffin arm but decided to do the lot. Window regulators are a reasonably common failure as are the door membranes. I've had a couple of coolant leaks, one spectacular where it dumped the whole lot in an instance and the other just a small leak. I also replaced the AOS, MAF, all oxygen sensors and the engine mount as part of preventative maintenance. That plus oil changes and 4 wheel alignment every 5k just because I'm fussy . Oh, and the battery has just died and as I'm under warranty I have to fork out £250 at the OPC for a 'Porsche' battery! So far enjoying mine, if it were for road use only the revvy nature of 2.9 might well be the way to go but extra mid range shove of 3.4 is nice too, especially for the odd track day.
In summary I think the engine is robust in the gen 2. Mine doesn't use a drop of oil and produces more BHP than the manufacturer figures with 53k on the clock. There are still items that fail and also wear and tear items that perhaps you'd think should last a little longer. Other than the flywheel though it's all been of reasonable expense. Still when the failures/wear and tear items come within a couple of months it's annoying
Good luck with the search.

Yep forgot about the window regulator, mine had one of those too, sounds like I got lucky ref the flywheel as in the end it was ok, I did not pay that for my clutch either as dealer I bought from sorted it but was quoted about that when I was looking around, £600 sounds very competitive though. Check the Porsche GB Club which has some good information on the buying guides (don't need to be a member to view).
Bought a gen 2 Cayman recently. For me gen 2 was a necessity not really due to engine/IMS issues (which I suspect are very small failure rate but look exacperated when you come on forums because people rarely talk about things that do not fail) I wanted the other features they added to the gen 2 such as nicer interior, PCM 3.0.
