In the market for a new car and after an exploration weekend checking out various 7 seater 4X4's settled on the Audi Q7. Looking for something in the last model range, so likely be a 2012ish car, around the £30k mark.

Seems to be plenty around - any advise on things to look out for or must have spec?

Oil leaks from the back of the engine are common as muck on the 3.0tdi. Best case it's gearbox off to reseal the timing casing, worst case it's engine out to reseal the upper sump.
Coolant leaks into the middle of the engine are a regular thing too. Remove the engine cover and see if there's any pink liquid in there.
Specs wise I can't help I'm afraid.

Could be worth looking for a new Skoda Kodiaq, you can get a new one for around £30k.

£30k for a 5 year old Audi is nuts

Especially on the q7 the electronics/mmi/dash layout are essentially from the c6 a6 which was badly dated when that went off sale in 2011

Interesting advice, have to admit I'd never even heard of the Kodiaq before and so hadn't considered it.

What I have looked at are (all in the same sort of price range/age)
- X5's - nice, bit smaller though and don't think they've aged as well as the Audi's cockpit
- ML's - haven't aged well at all
- XC90's - new models are great but still very expensive. The older models haven't aged well at all.

Haven't considered other 7 seaters. Interesting argument though of getting a new Skoda or something similar vs 5 year old Audi. Will have to pop into a dealership and see if they've got any demo models in yet.

Due in April I think.

My mate just got a 66 plate SQ5, nice car, quick for a diesel, but the interior is very dated, same will apply for a 2012 Q7 to be honest.

1st owner, 3 year warranty, you choose the spec and the finance deals are very good (£300/month with a few k deposit)

I would strongly recommend getting an approved used car and thus getting (pretty much) the manufacturer spec warranty.

Cant get my head around spending £30K on a 5 year old Audi though....

I get where you're coming from. Problem is that the decent 7 seaters that I like, especially deal approved used are all about the 30k mark. For approved used that's probably the cheapest you can get from dealers. The garage I was looking was not a dealer garage, but does a full year warranty etc.

What I'm looking for is a decent 7 seater than I can keep for around 5 years. Internal size (first 5 seats) is important to me as a) I'm 6"4 and b) have child seats with bases in the back of the car which take up a lot of room. Last row of seats and boot space are important, but I'm in the mindset that they are for occasional use therefore not as critical.

I want something reliable and given I want to keep it for about 5 years that puts me under 50k miles on the clock. I do about 10k a year, probably about 50% local town and 50% long MW trips.

That criteria initially pushed me towards BMW/Audi/LR/Volvo who I think are a big premium makes

Audi - Really like the car. Great build quality. Never had an Audi before so interior still feels new even though 5 year old car. Granted its dated tech, but its still decent stuff
BMW - Bit on the small size. Interior feels more dated than Audi
Landrover - Not keen on interior. Also feels it drives a bit like a brick
Volvo - New models are superb, but old ones have very dated interiors - not keen

The other alternative as pointed out is look at some of the cheaper 7 seaters around and get something new / newer. Hyundai Santa Fey, Mitsubishi SUV etc. Have only looked at these briefly today but I'm not amazed by the interior or exterior of any of them. The Skoda is actually the only one thats peaked my interest, although its not available to even look at in the flesh until Apr (not a massive problem as happy to wait to purchase). Getting one new would be a big depreciation hit, but it will pretty much be solid for 5 years and can get a warranty for that period.

VW Tiguan 7 seater avail second half of this year

You could have a look at a 5 seater Tiguan now as that will have pretty much the same interior, etc.

Discounts of 10-15% readily available on Tiguan so the 7 seater variant "should" be similar.

Doubt you'd get much discounts on something new like this. When I spoke with Skoda dealer easier today to see if demo models were on display he said they're entire initial stock allocation was sold out already.

Will keep any eye on this, looks pretty similar to Skoda in terms of price and design.

That new Tiguan hasnt been out long and already theres significant discounts. I wouldnt believe what your local dealer tells you.

Also the Tiguan, Q5, etc hold their values exceptionally well.

A 10 year old Q7 is likely to be worth around £10K. Thats still a £20K bath you're going to face in the 5 years you will own it.

Believe it about the depreciation.

Problem is I'd think a new Tiguan or skoda etc that's about the 30 mark now would only be 10 in 5 years as well so I'm in the same bucket

Agreed, however you said new would mean a "big depreciation hit". I think it would be similar at worst, plus

=> with the new car you'd have full manufacturers warranty for 3 years, plus extendable for the final two.
=> Less non-warranty wear and tear.
=> Easier on fuel (2.0TDI as opposed to 3.0TDI) (i used to get 27MPG from my X5 3.0d 7 seater)
=> Cheaper component parts
=> Cheaper servicing
=> Running a brand new car to your spec rather than a (well) used car.
=> Being able to take advantage of incentivised finance packages and servicing packages.

Up to you entirely of course, just worth considering smile

One thing i would urge is that if you buy a Q7 or X5 or whatever DO go APPROVED USED. The warranties are a thousand times better than these supposed "comprehensive" after market warranties that get slapped on to cars on forecourts
