After some deliberation I am about to order a 640d GC, as I will be living on our motorway network for the next couple of years. I was hankering after a D3 Alpina, but the zero finance on the 6 was too good to ignore. So I am wondering about a power upgrade at some point to match (or get near) the torque output of the Alpina, DMS seem to be the go to company but I'm seeking advice from those in the know, especially on whether it is worth the outlay and if there could be any potential warranty issues.

If BMW could link the modification to any potential fault in the future, and I'm sure they will try, they they won't pay out on such a claim. I'd probably be inclined to keep it standard unless willing to potentially loose engine and drivetrain warranty

Warranty will of course be an issue. I'd avoid DMS, they seem to have a reputation of claiming their cars produce more power than they actually do, do a bit more research but I know of one M4 owner who had 3 separate dyno's confirm his car was producing 60hp less than DMS' did.

If you're at all worried about warranty though I'd not do it. You never know what failures could happen, manufacturing defect etc, but then your warranty will be void because of the tune, even if it didn't cause it.

As you know, I had a similar choice Blue. I doubt you will be disappointed with the Grand Coupe even in its standard form - its a gorgeous design IMO. If I didnt need a boot for the dog, I think a 640d (or M6 GC maybe...) would have been on the cards.

Good luck, don't forget to post in Readers Rides thumbup

I think AC Schnitzer warranty power upgrades, but they're not cheap.

Cheers mate, I take it you are getting to grips with the D3 by now? I was very close to going D3 (still might) but I will be living on the M5 for the next couple of years as we build a new home in Devon and I continue to work part-time in the Midlands, so the accent is on cruising and economy. I was blown away by the Alpina, especially when compared to my RS4, but the zero finance and healthy discount on the 640 is too tempting. Will keep you posted.

I love Alpinas but because you cannot get any BMW discounts or contributions re cost they are a very expensive car in comparison to a "normal" BMW plus only 2 years warranty

It just tripped over the 1k mile running in period so only recently exploiting all the power....its bonkers that a car this practical, comfortable and relatively economical can be so quick. On the motorway, the way the speed builds is impressive and the gear change just makes it feel relentless. It feels quicker than my 997S, and even sounds OK (for a diesel at least!) at high revs.

Good luck with the car choice and home build (I grew up in Devon, I think thats why I like the Isle of Wight so much!).

Even without a claim, there's still a reasonable chance of the car being 'red flagged' into the BMW system as being aftermarket tuned during a service or any other 'plug-in' check, which you don't really want.

If you want to get it done, talk to the guys at Emaps.

Yep, speak to Simon at Emaps.

It's amazing how much better the 35/40d engine is after a remap. Has a real rush to 5500rpm rather than fizzling out as stock

I have an Emaps remap on my 635d. Fantastic performance increase. 350 bhp.

I've looked at the remaps on and off on my 640d GC. I came to the conclusion that I just wouldn't see the benefit of it.

Like you I spend most of my time on the motorway and it's more than fast for mile munching, I would save your money and add the £500+ as options on your new 640d, you'll get more benefit from these while cruising the motorway.

  • edit - the only approved remap (not really approved as AC warrant it for 3years not BMW), or ECU bolt on, is the AC Schnitzer ECU which is a tad over £3k. - +47bhp and + 60nm

Blue, did you ever get the remap done? I'm looking for one and am considering emaps or AmD (custom dyno map).

Yup the numbers are impressive - but the gearbox rating on a 640d is only 700nm, and the remap takes it to 730nm... If I go for emaps I may have to ask Simon to lower the torque slightly frown

I guess that is the 515lb mark? odd/interesting that he goes over that as he does a shed load of BMWs wonder what his take on that is. That is Alpina D3s limit as well FWIW (515)

That's right, I think I'll ask Simon about it and see what he says - will let you know his view.
