There are also lots of how to guides on other forums. PH is not one of those. You'll find lots on boxa.net . Most of the stuff you want to do on a 996 is the same as a 986.

Thanks for that.
I've found, almost, the perfect one for me, but it's a 4.
Is that the end of the world....?
I'd prefer a RWD but this is a good one.
Might have been said already, but it's totally possible to remove the front diff, propshaft etc and make it RWD if you want.

I find Facebook format useless for any properly useful information. Good for short burst comments but if you want to search guides with pics, how to's etc, forum works much better.

I'm a C2 guy, but the C4 guys assure us there is very little difference. The weight penalty is about 60-70Kgs, I believe, so not terribly noticeable. Some even prefer a little more weight over the nose. Try it and see.

I estimate £2K per year average, significantly less if you do the work yourself. The "101 Projects" web-site/book by Pelican Parts is a fantastic resource for doing this; has saved me thousands (and I've learnt a lot about the car).
Ohhh what book ?

Off to Google
Indeed - Pelican Parts site is a proper Information Goldmine http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/996_tech....

Well, gents, thanks for the continued responses.
Trying to move some money around here and there, but had an offer accepted on a lovely silver (compromise) C4 (compromise) 3.4 with 82k miles and ridiculous service history.
Ticks every other box so to have only 2 compromises on a near on 20 year old Porsche seems a win to me!
Black leather, so far from worst choice. No sunroof, either. Sensible number of owners.
Quality tyres, properly rated, just had discs and pads all round recently, loads and loads of service history so I think it's one of the better ones.
Other 'negatives' are rear wiper (was it an option?) and tinted rear three windows but having spoke to the owner he comes across alright.

See my comment above, AWD compromise is easily sorted thumbup Especially if you're a mechanic!

I did spot that, thanks for the info. It's something i'll consider but if people think there's no real difference with a C4 than a 2, then it might just stay as it is.

Tbh, I'd do it more for the weight thing, you could take about 40kg+ out by removing AWD bits from memory.

I've owned plenty of 'performance' cars before, but i'm not sure i'll see a great deal of benefit from losing 40 kilos from a Porsche.
Especially if that's all I'm going to do. As i'd be leaving all the standard interior in place etc
I have been there before, it's a slippery slope once you start with a car...!

True! For a C4 it'd be marginal I guess, I mean the sunroof on a 996 adds about 17kg from memory so in a way it only makes sense if you're doing a few other bits and pieces in some ways! I investigated the AWD delete when I had a C4S as they're a good 120kg more than a C2 eek CarreraLightweightRacing on here has a good list of easy wins weight wise, and in total I think he's aiming for sub 1150kg without changing the standard look. With AWD removal, you could reasonably easily get 70kg out of a 996 C4 for little or no money I think, so that's like taking out a whole passenger and that is noticeable!

Something to consider, I suppose.
'Mine' (which I don't own yet, but have had an offer accepted) hasn't got a sunroof, and I think it looks a lot better for it.
However, it has a rear wiper, which i think ruins the back view a bit so that might go.
I'll have to be careful not to lose originality as i can see the nice ones appreciating a bit in a few years.

Congratulations!

The rear wiper is simple enought to delete, you can buy a blanking plug in the correct colour from oPC I think, CLR mentioned above states it only saves about 2kg but it looks a lot better & I'm tempted to do mine.

The rear wiper delete kits are on ebay too. Keep meaning to buy one!

Got the summer tyres back on mine yesterday and had a razz down the lanes last night. Love that car!

Some catching up, some fault fixing, some stuff I've added - the ~£450 bill was to add the stalk that controls the on board computer so that I could get fuel/speed data.

Another bill was taking out the lower centre console and fitting a Becker Cascade Pro:

(If you're over 6' I strongly recommend the centre console delete btw).

I've paid more on fixing, maintaining and upgrading than I paid for the car, and begrudged not a penny of it - I love driving the car.

I've also taken a very no compromise approach to doing things - I'm aiming to have a car with everything in A1 condition.

Ha, there's fat chance of me needing to remove the centre console then, i'm a midget.
I'll be doing a lot of the 'tinkering' stuff myself. An annual service and any major repairs will be done by a specialist, and any small improvements here and there i'll do.
