Hello got an issue with my 2000 R6.

Bought in Deccember and have been out for the past few weekends on it with no issues on it, Place I bought it from put a 3 months warranty on it when I got it so I will ring them tomorrow when they are open to see what they want to do but looking for potential problems or confirmation of what I think is wrong.

Ok the story/ details.
yesterday started up and set off fuel light on I went to the garage and filled up on v-power, I had a full tank the week before also. rode it best part of 40/50 miles to Southport then back to Rivington, stopped for a brew in Southport and again at Rivington. All was well. until I came to leave Rivington.
It started fine and rode about 100 meters think I was in the wrong gear it spluttered to a halt. Thinking I've flooded it I tried to fire it up again with no throttle to clear out the carbs and get it running but no luck. Spent the next 20 mins trying to get it to start and a few passing bikers tried with me. Sometimes it would start if you had full throttle and kept turning it over it would splutter for a bit and then fire and rev fine, until I tried to set off and then it would die again.

And this is where I am now, got recovered home on a trailer and got it in the garage. it will start in the garage (level ground, doesn't like starting if pointing up or down hill). once started it will run and rev fine as if its perfectly fine. Lift the bike vertical (leaving stand down and not touching anything just moving it from side stand to upright) and it will splutter and cut out, it will stay running if you keep the throttle and revs on but as soon as you release the throttle it will splutter and cut out.

It still has half a tank of fuel in, that was fresh and I did 40/50 miles on. It will run on lent over on the stand so fuel pump must be working. I cannot see any kind of tilt sensor under the seat, but I don't think it would run on the stand if it was this.

I think it is the carbs that need a good clean and balance? anyone agree, disagree or have any other ideas?

Again 2000 R6 carb model.

Thanks

Jazoli

Could be float heights in the carbs, either way they need taking out and inspecting, its not that hard, just fiddly.

Fill it right up again & see if it starts/runs at all angles.

If runs OK will point to fuel pump. If not, you have a heavy tank to remove.

Had similar problem on a FZR1000. Once fuel ran below the level of the carbs it would stop. You may have been lucky that once running previously the siphoning effect would have kept drawing fuel 'up' to the carbs.

Otherwise, fuel filter, cap vent.

Another easy check is to make sure the choke is not stuck on slightly, just because the choke lever at the bar end is pushed back does not mean the choke rail on the carbs is fully home.

Those symptoms may just point to something electrical. I had a similar experience on my Aprilia Futura as the side stand cut out switch was dying. As the broken cable in the switch made and broke contact, so the engine would cough, splutter and surge like it was running out of fuel.

I’ve also seen the same with poor contacts in a kill switch and with bad earths on coils.

I agree it sounds electrical (albeit I posted that in the wrong thread last night  - blame the Brewdog IPA biggrin).

Well it appears I may have fix it.

Had a quick look on Monday night with a view to phoning the dealer on Tuesday to discuss the issue. As I decided I couldn't see anything obvious I was putting the tank back down dropped one of the bolts that holds it in place so obviously it went in the worst place ever under the airbox, mighty frustrated id now have to take the tank off move the airbox just to get the bloody bolt.

Anyway tank off removing airbox and what comes with the airbox the carbs, no longer attached to the engine. so I ferreted around for the bolt worried it was going to end up in the engine now the carbs weren't attached and flapping around.

Anyway last night I went an reattached the carbs we had been off at some point as one of the clips to hold them in as pointing the wrong direction. so after an hour of fighting to tighten the clips to hold the carbs in, (Don't know if other bikes are as hard to do but you cant get to the things at all). all reassembled and fired first time no issues and now runs on the stand and upright. I'm guessing whoever owned it last couldn't get to the clips to hold the carbs on did his best and flogged it.

Need to take it on a run to check all is well but I think that was it.

Thanks for the help
