Need to take the steering wheel off my v8v, is it a garage job or is it something that can be done by me bearing in mind I'm not very mechanical ..

Easy to do yourself. I'm not mechanical and even I found it easy. Some guides online that are great. Seem to remember a key point is to disconnect the battery because of the airbag

Just had a quote of £78 plus VAT for a wheel swap including moving air bag over from "works" service.

I'm having my Alcantara retrimmed at works at the moment. I shan't share the cost...

My quote was £1450 plus vat which is double the cost of brand new wheel from the factory in Alcantara.

That's still far less expensive than if Q did it. They're north of 4k GBP just to have the stitching done in a different color!

Hmmn, I was under the impression that Q was actually WS, and that it was they who added/changed the special items. I didn't think the factory got involved other than special paint, or other things that only the factory could do. Admittedly my car was produced before there was an official Q, but all the special items (not options) were carried out by WS after the car was completed by the factory.

Works don't have anything to do with Q, that's an in-house factory thing.

However, Works do have the ability to rebuild a car from scratch all onsite, it's a pretty impressive setup.

As for the cost, as has been said you can actually buy a brand new wheel in either leather or alcantara for about a grand, even less I think and you can just fit it yourself. Mine's being re-trimmed in full alcantara at Works at the moment, but that was included in the deal price. I wouldn't be paying those prices though it's mad, just take it off yourself and send it to one of many independent trimmers who'll make it perfect I'm sure.

If Works are only quoting £78 to swap the wheel, it means it's a 5 minute job wink

I've been quoted £165.00 to have done by Royal Steering wheels. I presume that you've merely forgotten to insert a decimal point into that number before posting?? smile

This is not actually true as I asked works to put me a new wheel on based on the Amersham AM ebay Alcantara wheel that is listed however when they came to fit it was discovered its not the right part. The right part is £2550 +Vat. frown

That's not quite accurate in my experience....You can have a GT12 wheel for much less than that.

All this talk of replacing the wheel....why, when a re-trim can be had for £165, which no doubt includes any colour stitching etc you might want too.

It is accurate, and I've got the ordering form if you'd like to get a steering wheel from Q. The GT12 steering wheel is its own item, not a Q offering. Requesting a modified OEM steering wheel would be handled by Q, and that's where the cost skyrockets.
