So, just for fun, I own a 7gts but keep looking a bog standard 997.1s and thinking they are ageing rather well and possibly better than the .2s. I don't know why, but they seem more classically 911 and a bolder design. What do you think and why?

I agree. Little difference in looks between 1 and 2 to the layman.
Mine.

The .1 and .2 have a different appeal in my opinion.

The .1 has more of the 70s and 80s 911 about it; almost a hint of luxury car as much as sports car, if that makes any sense. The .2 however got sharpened up and leans more towards the sporty.

The .1 has nicer mirrors. Not sure why they made them clumpier with the groove on the .2, when they were a pretty design before.

The .2 rear end wins.

I think the .1 crab claw wheels, especially with the 5mm spacers, are possibly the coolest wheels on any modern-day 911.

Both the .1 and .2 knock the 991 into a cocked hat in terms of being cool.

I've 997.2 and don't notice much difference if any to the 997.1? The rear 'led' lights and mirrors mainly

Weren't the mirrors changed (bigger) for the American market?

I hadn't noticed the new mirrors before but now I can't help noticing them dammit!

I see aesthetic positives in both the .1 & .2 externally but I far prefer the black centre console/fascia of the .2 interior and all the better in my book if the whole interior is black complete with black-spoked steering wheel (did they become standard at one point?) and with the black instrument faces of the base model.

Externally, I have a slight bias towards the NB base model but couldn't live with the base model's exhaust tips (of course they are easily changed).

Choice of rims makes another huge difference to what works/irks...

I personnel think for a daily drive there is no question the .2 is more reliable, easier to live with, smoother, more economical and generally probably a more sensible choice. I think the .1 is better as a weekend/ classic type car, engine definitely more traditionally 911 ish (if it's still going) and I think they will become more like the 964, lots of mods and engine work at

Don't disagree, but original question was just on looks. As you mention the engines however, despite all the well discussed problems, the engines sound a hell of a lot more characterful than the .2 DFI engine which is a bit of a shame for us .2 owners.

what makes you say the 997.1 engine is a lot more characterful ? The DFI is more powerful with better torque and more fuel efficient. Do you mean the reliability issues gives it character ? just wondering...

This only dawned on me when I went from a .1 to a .2, and I was reversing into my space at home - thought I was seeing something, as there just seemed to be something odd!!

I always thought it was the 996 + PSE for noise. Never been a big fan on the running lights on the 997.2 otherwise not much in it for me - although the wheel options are better on the latter model.

No no not reliability!!!. Iam referring to the fact that I found the c2s .1 a more 911 sounding engine (almost as if a bit air cooled) than I find with the .2. The .2 is much better engine particularly in GTS form for power, torque, reliability, refinement and has a more thrilling top end. But down low it doesn't sound as interesting to me as the .1 IMHO.

Agree 996 with PSE was even sweeter. Never driven a .2 3.6 but sometimes less maybe more!

I am bias but I prefer the shape of the rear lights on the 997.1, and I am no fan of led lights in general! So 997.1 for me. Heres mine:

Have to say though, I was following a 996 today and those rear ends are nicer than my 997.1, granted the front 997 end is nicer but the 996 rear in fat or thin is the winner there......although not the title of this tread

I'm going to inject some reality and point out that both cars look almost identical.

Next question?

Only 996 that does it for me is a C4S especially in arctic silver. Looks pretty serious from the rear.

I've always liked how both look, although I do prefer the .2 slightly. I think the issue for me is a psychological one with my slight lack of affection for the .1 . I don't think they did enough with the engines on the .1 - I remember when I found out they'd only increased the base model power by 10bhp all I could think of was the word "lazy". At least they should have given it the power kit from the 996.2. Back in 2008 or so when i first got into Porsche, I couldn't fathom why anyone would buy a base 997 Carrera over a lightly used 996.2. You'd have had to reeeeeally hate those headlights to spend the extra money
