I know there are threads about it but nothing seems to make sense, how do I get at the nuts on the back of the bracket off, do I have to remove the seats?

Remove the rear parcel shelf. Then the nuts are down the back of the rear seat on the passenger side. You'll need a friend!

It's possible to remove it without a helper if you clamp a vice grip on the nut and wedge it in position

It's been a few years since I did this on mine but I think so, I don't remember ever having the back seat out
