Spartan Cayman 718 pdk purchase
Discussion
Hi there gents,
Its been a long time since ive owned a Porsche (928s owner) and as its my 50th early next year ive been busy squirreling away money to add to my ever growing Cayman 718 fund.
I plan to buy as cheap as i can and as i have no interest in anything other than pdk im sure the base car would suit my needs just fine.I plan to keep the car for many years so options for decent resale arent a priority.
Anyone else gone for base or are the options just too tempting...
thanks..

I've literally just been speccing one up as a possibility for my brother. I was trying to keep the options off (no leather or anything) ended up with £4k of kit! Most expensive being bigger wheels at £1800 - the standard ones just look a bit too puny to me.
The things I see as essentials are the sort of thing you'd find standard on a many lesser cars, auto wipers, heated seats etc. These are usually only a few hundred quid each.

(Edit: If its not a daily driver I guess you don't really need any of that nonsense!)

Sport tailpipes
Model designation 718 (no cost)
Park assist rear
Black/crayon partial leather
Crests on headrests
Heated mfsw
Heated seats

As you are planning to keep the car for many years have you considered the 981 instead? A more characterful normally aspirated engine and very little downside compared to the 718. You also save on the punitive new car tax. There are a load of GTSs which have just come onto the OPC list, worth a look maybe?
I went for base, and then added a load of extras in the end, but not including PDK. (Which is amazing, but I am not ready for an auto yet, even though PDK defies all objections to auto 'boxes). Other bizarre things I opted for were:
Standard seats
Standard wheels
No leather
Things I did really want were:
PTV (just for the diff)
PASM (can't have PTV without PASM, but it's actually really good, so I'll live)
Parking sensors F&R (because I'm rubbish at parking)
Smoking pack (because everyone reckons it's a no-brainer)
Sports steering wheel (for me it's just more comfortable)
Heated seats (it's grim up north)
Frivolous things include:
Carrara white metallic
Carbon interior pack
Nav, Connect+ and DAB (only wanted DAB, but I'll hope the nav is at least average, I use it)
Coloured wheel centres (because I want them)
Think that's about it. Runs in at around £48k, so not that close to Spartan, but I bet it's on the low side compared to many. I'll either like it or sell it. Should be here at the beginning of May.

If you are going for the 20" wheels, I'd definitely go for PASM - the ride is (for me) unacceptable otherwise. The things I see as essentials are the sort of thing you'd find standard on a many lesser cars, auto wipers, heated seats etc. These are usually only a few hundred quid each.

Very easy to add 1 thing, then need another to work with the first and so on and before you know it...£50k.

981 GTS is the Cayman to have right now however they're somewhat dearer than a base 718..If you must go 718 I think the OP is spot on, add nothing except PDK if that's your preference.

However, if you look at the current 981 stock list and filter on £45-50k and less than 10k miles and PDK there are number of cars which I would choose ahead of a 718.

Cheap solution - ditch the 20" wheels.Very easy to add 1 thing, then need another to work with the first and so on and before you know it...£50k.

I'd leave the basic wheels on it as in something like yellow they look fine to my eye, and you could always pick up a used set of something else at a later date rather than pay mega Porsche prices.
Other must have for me is a leather interior - nothing looks worse than an unleathered modern Porsche IMO. A £40K+ car should have cow in it or alcantara, none of this leatherette/textured plastic business which is a real turn off
Sports Seats Plus are a must for me. Standard seats don't hold you place in spirited driving.
In the same vein as the leather, a £40K car must have basic cruise control, climate control, front/rear parking sensor and seat heating (esp if used daily). Everything else I could live without, including sports exhaust believe it or not.

Thanks for the comments so far,
Sapphire blue is my colour choice and im happy how the car looks on the Cayman 18" alloys, leather is a no no for me as ive never been a fan of it.So im a shade over the £45k (by £478) that ive got sitting in my Cayman piggy bank burning a Cayman size hole.
So a trip to Gallions reach Porsche is planned for Monday (i better get a move on if i want it by 2018)
Just to add im not a fan of the looks of the 981 and a new Porsche has been the plan for some time now.

Clearly lots of people have a leather fetish (and I suspect it does aid resale)but I'm with you, it does nothing for me in a car. I have leather on suites at home where its deficiencies, cold in winter, hot in summer, slippy all year round aren't a problem. But in a car? I can't see it - and, particularly, on surfaces I don't touch (like the dashboard) I can't see the appeal.Sapphire blue is my colour choice and im happy how the car looks on the Cayman 18" alloys, leather is a no no for me as ive never been a fan of it.So im a shade over the £45k (by £478) that ive got sitting in my Cayman piggy bank burning a Cayman size hole.

Picked up this week and went standard interior - it's great: as per my other posts, strongly recommend the alcantara storage compartment lid, breaks things up really nicely, extends the alcantara theme a little, looks great in either flavour and costs hardly anything in Porsche terms - is one of my favourite options and won't be getting hot in the hot and so on. It has also been positively commented on without prompting by every occupant since collection.Options wise if I had to go without the more obvious options I chose I would say I could definitely live without the climate, auto wipers, heated seats - they are all good and should be standard but they aren't totally essential. PASM not needed on standard wheels imo. Parking sensors, would at least spec rear in my case as it's cheaper than a repair and would try to see whether you prefer the gt sport steering wheel, not hugely expensive but in my mind worth the little extra.
I think it's the smaller (and often cheaper) changes that sometimes make the car feel a bit more personal.
Personally i don't really get why you'd order a no frills virtually optionless car to maximise VFM yet still specify PDK unless you had a physical limitation that prevented you driving a manual. If the idea is to keep it simple, PDK seems like the antithesis of that, even more so if it's a high days and holidays car.

Of course thats true - but its a fact of life that the great majority of buyers (80% plus) choose PDK (and come to think of it metallic paint, cruise control, leather, big wheels...)Gassing Station | Boxster/Cayman | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
