So looking for a new toy and always fancied a Glanza since my boy racer days, but could never afford the insurance. I'm the grand old age of 35 now so starting to take a look around.

Just wanted to gauge opinions and if you'd recommend an alternative?

EK9 Civic or a Nissan Pulsar GTI-R comes to mind. You need to keep within the period. All should hold their value forever so go with what you like the most.

Was thinking about the GTI-R, but they're pretty hard to find, especially in decent shape.

Not a fan of the EK9 myself.

I imported 2 glanzas for the wife and an EK 9 for myself back in 2008 when they were cheap.
The Glanzas are a £200 car with a turbo engine, very tinny. Not so cheap to insure being an import, not particularly fast, but they can look pretty good.
Prices have gone up a fair bit now, but most are modified.
Mine were standard, as was the EK 9, but it was so much quicker, better built. Even that was annoying on long journeys. Low gearing. Prices have shot up.
The second Glanza came with a recaro seat (only 1) and I put these wheels on

I've never heard of a Glanza R! Is that some type of special edition or is it just a sticker?

Well spotted,
The original stickers were tired, my mate had a sticker machine so he made these.
He made a small R which went in the clocks too.

I'd much rather an impreza or evo personally.
