Hi all,

Well, here it is...my C2S is in the shop. She (Helga) took me all the way down to Cornwall from Suffolk last week, A roads, B roads, motorways etc. Didn't miss a beat. We got back home Saturday morning, and I took it out to the shops ... and she had a problem. Luckily the engine was at low speed...but I heard a whirring/flapping noise and I switched her off. Didn't dare try to start her again. So she's sat with the guys at PIE Performance waiting for diagnosis, and looking very sorry for herself with her tow loop fitted. Paranoia abound.

Scared.

Ta, I hope so ... although part of me thinks that I've got a warranty and that an engine rebuild with them contributing might not be a bad thing!

"Whirring and flapping" - hopefully just the serpentine belt snapped!

Yeah I hope so too. Is that visible on opening the engine lid? I had a look at the belts and they all appear to be there.

Hi all ... it's official...IMS failure frown

Engine's being removed and stripped down sometime this week to find out how badly damaged it is. Hopefully the low engine speed when it broke will help. We shall also see whether the warranty is worth the paper it's written on.

Best of luck jezzza, I have been struck by the Porsche engine gremlins in the past 987.1S, bore scored burning a litre of oil to 200 Miles. I feel your pain.

Are you going down the Hartec route. Baz on here is a fountain of knowledge (owns/works for Hartec)

Cheers mate smile Actually, no. My specialist (PIE Performance) is 3 miles down the road from my house, and they're great guys. The car's there with them, and they're arranging for the engine to be removed and stripped down, so that the warranty guy can inspect it.

I did call Hartech and asked them if they could do it (only because PIE have already got several to do and said it might be 1-2 months before they can start)... but Hartech guy said they've got 40 odd engines in for rebuild (!) and that it would probably be 1-2 months from them too. I do trust the guys at PIE. They know what they're doing and their governor, Chris, is a gentleman.

Glad to hear your getting it sorted (and under warranty even better). It’s a shame these engines seem to be so much pot luck as to if you get a good one or not. It’s certainly put me off the brand.

Having said that I do keep looking at a 718.......

What we all dread Jezzaaa, but you are in good hands with Chris -and his engine assembler ‘Ash’. Both great Porsche people and IMO always a pleasure to deal with. I am sure you know that they can send your engine to Hartech for machining of upgrades and then do the final assembly in house, which might save a little time. Chris rebuilt his own 997 engine late this spring due to bore scoring and IIRC explored a lot of options before deciding on his own, ‘do it right, do it once’ route. Best if luck, hope you are back on the road without too much delay.

Out of interest, who did you use for your warranty? And what sort of cost was it? Looking to get a 996/997 in the next year and would be keen to have a warranty for peace of mind. Fingers crossed the rebuild is fully covered.

Thanks mate smile Yeah, Chris was telling me about his 997 and the bore scoring. Mine didn't have a bore scoring issue ... and I was thinking about talking to him about installing a Direct Oil Feed IMS lubricator thingy, which I've used before. Ho hum.

Erm, I can't remember off the top of my head...it's one I hadn't heard of before, but the supplying dealer said they were good and he'd done many successful claims. The important bit was upgrading the hourly rate (to £100) and the max claim limit (to £5000). So while it won't cover the whole cost, it should meet half of it. They've already confirmed that they will honour the claim since IMS failure is just that....not wear and tear. I'll try and dig it out.
