I am making this assessment based on reading rather than any technical knowledge or mechanical understanding. Hopefully someone of great knowledge or experience can offer some advice.

I have recently noticed that ‘dreaded spot of oil on the garage floor’ which has wept (it’s certainky not dripping) from my 996.2 GT3.

I understand that infrequent use can exacerbate RMS failure due to the vacuum behind the seal, so I am wondering whether this is the likely culprit?

The front (gearbox end) of the engine is bone dry, but there are traces of oil evident towards the rear of engine (exhaust end).

Perhaps the pictures will help and someone can chime in?

Thanks,
Matt

Well, at the risk of looking a complete bell*nd, you're looking at things arse about face.
The RMS is at the front (dry) gearbox end of the engine, whereas the crank pulley seal is at the rear (wet) exhaust end of the engine. So I'm dubious your RMS is the problem !! biggrin

There are several bits that could be leaking at the rear (crank pulley) end of the engine though.

Edit to add :

P.S It may be there, but it looks like you're missing a nut off the engine mount plate to exhaust/cats securing bracket smile

Now that you mention the obvious, it does make sense that the RMS would appear to be in good order.. Oh dear, a north-south fail on my part!

Not that I am looking to apportion blame (ok I am) but I was visiting my local OPC this week for a new key, and during the key coding process the technician flagged the oil weep and suspected that the RMS could be the cause.

Perhaps the OPC techcinican also forget where the gearbox is located!

Thanks Slippydiff, I best carry out some more reading :-)

A common leak on the Mezger is from the timing case bolts. The washers gradually corrode and deteriorate, so that the bolt is no longer tight or creating a seal. It's not a hugely difficult fix, but usually requires the engine to be dropped slightly.

Unscrupulous dealers (you need to look on the 911uk forum to get wise about those!) like 'the' one I bought my 996 turbo from will often nip the bolts up to hide the leak, but this is not a long term solution.

Thanks Digga, this is also useful reading.

I'll need to get under the car with appropriate cleaners/degreasers to better establish the source. I also need to replace a dodgy o2 sensor which fires a sporadic CEL... So whilst I am there and all that.

Anwyay, thanks again for your advice guys - always apprenticed.

p.s. I do lurk on the other forum but under the alias of Matt_SM. It's a great forum too but much less convoluted to add photos on PH!

Best regards,
Matt

Sometimes the CEL light is as a result of sports cats fitted to your exhaust; a pair of sensor stand-offs would likely keep the light at bay. Check the plausibility of the fault codes before stumping up for O2 sensors.

6/7 GT3's can leak from the front main seal; the IMS cap seal; the guide rail pin washers which are all fixable relatively cheaply - very rarely; thankfully! - it's the O ring on the Crank front main bearing collar.

Also; the factory used to advise jacking the car up on the crankcase but now they categorically state not to jack the car up using the crankcase - it looks like the pad is on the catch hook - a cracked crankcase would leak more than the front end one you have at the moment.
