Most people powder coat calipers. Not sure why. Maybe it's more durable. You can of course choose any colour you want. I've always thought the more recent Porsche trend of red calipers on the S models is a bit cheesy.

I like the red on some colours of cars but my car is 3.6 and would have had gloss black with white decals so I'll re-instate that. I guess powder coat for rebustness but we'll see how long the high temp paint and lacquer that I intend to use lasts.

thanks

So my 997.1 Carrera S has just come back from a major service at an indy with a report of split silencers and corroded mounts. I've been quoted around £2-3k for Dansk replacements or £5k for OEM. I was told that OEM are the best quality, they've lasted 118k miles after all, Dansk apparently could do 60k but others might not last more than a year or two.

Can I ask what are people's thoughts on the different exhausts available, in terms of quality in particular. I'm not bothered about making the car noisier than it already is, but quality/longevity of the part and cost is my concern.

Incidentally, the car's a keeper. I've had her 7 years and she's not going anywhere!

I would avoid Dansk. Look nice but...
I would go Topgear switchable. Or OEM.
I have OEM sports exhaust on my 4.1, but Topgear manifolds and 200 cell cats. Good quality and fit and very reasonable.

I'd go OEM as your indy correct aftermarket use lower grade steel. Ask for a PSE version if it was an option on the 997.1 C2S. If you contact Porsche via email they should hopefully look after you try dan.redpath@porschetonbridge.co.uk. Should not cost anything like 5k GBP unless you need the whole system inc manifolds but even then Porsche can give you anything up to 25% discount on parts if you ask very nicely.

Could you have the original repaired ?

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll speak to a few people and get some prices and then take it a local garage who I’ve used before and are reliable and get their opinion. I’ve got a fair old list of things that need sorting out, the garage who did the service helpfully put everything in order of priority, so I can work through the list and get it sorted.

Repairing the original is something I hadn’t thought of, but I suppose once the joints start wearing out, they’ll deteriorate all over? Not something I have the faintest clue about tbh, so, again, I’ll get another opinion.

Couldn't you get a full Inconel system for [total guess] 8k which is half the weight of steel and is surely the absolute pinnacle in terms of exhaust fetishism.

Exhaust fetishism is a new concept to me - I'm sure they're gorgeous, but if I ever get to the point of looking for a pinnacle to reach, I'll start with a bare metal respray, new roof, refurbished leather and get something invincible sprayed over the undercarriage. I don't realistically think that'll ever happen though - I'll just keep driving about with a grin on my face and pretending to be a boy racer at every set of lights in the South-East and beyond!

Thanks for the suggestion tho'. biggrin

The original exhausts can be patched up, I've sorted the seams on the underside of both my silencers (with mild steel by mistake) and a couple of years later they're still OK. If I had patched them up with stainless I'm sure they'd last another 20 years.

If it's more complicated than just seams it may not be economical depending on labour rates etc.

Not sure where you are based but https://www.exhaustmods.co.uk in Hertfordshire can repair most issues, brackets, seams etc and replace all the fixings with SS at the same time.

How big a job is it to replace the mounts - presumably that are going to corrode away eventually?

Quick Google found these

I assume the mounts are standard so gives an idea

Thank you. Yes, I'm aware that there are all sorts of after-market silencers available, I was just questioning their quality etc. in light of the indy telling me that cheaper options wouldn't last long. I wouldn't know one grade of steel from another, so I need to speak to someone who knows what's what.

The repair suggestion is interesting - I'll give the PCW place a call and see if they can have a look at it - many thanks FMB.

I'm not recommending those above in the pics but the metal does look thick and chunky where the mounts are located.

When I fixed my seams I also sorted the mounts. In my case the metal the mount attached to (the outer shell of the silencer) had thined out and simply cracked. I think I cleaned it, welded it up and then ground it back but in retrospect some thin plate, covering the crack, welded to the bracket and the shell would have been better.

Let us know how you get on PCW, he's quite busy.

You are getting a good start down the road to Exhaust fetishism.

Ha, I think you're right. When I start going to events and examining the rear underside of all the Porsches I can find in microscopic detail, I'll know I'm beyond hope. smile

I went to a BMW event once and some people had their cars raised at the rear and mirrors placed on the ground beneath so you could see everything easily.

I have the Top Gear Switchable Mufflers and their 200 Cel Cats. The good bit is the difference between the valves open and closed is massive, the quality of it all is good too and all in before fitting I think I paid £1800 with their tips too, so cheaper if you want to keep them OEM. If you're on the 911uk forum you can get 10% off.

When its all open, I am still 50/50 about the noise, its pretty loud.
