996 Carrera 2 facelift model, bought new in March 2002, covered 80K miles in 5.5 years.
Original engine, RMS replaced twice, with clutch replaced on second RMS failure.
Other than couple of minor problems, car's been fantastic and totally reliable.

And what do you hope to gain from this survey??????????

Like in the garage, we only see the bad ones, the good ones far out way them.

Buy your used car warrenty's, never understand people not buying them and then moaning when PCGB wont offer good will claim, epecially when they have had them serviced at none OPC garage

.. Thanks 'Porsche Tech' , you and your 4 posts tell me that this topic is worth something .. You wouldn't have bothered posting if it didn't touch a nerve. Now don't go wasting precious posts by replying there's a good chap.

I feel very strongly that if this topic is held as a sticky for the next few months , it'll be the closest thing to date that we'll have , of real figures on 996 RMS and engine failures.

Please folks , if you've not already done so , post your 996 stats ... stat!!

Hi Ballcock total agreement with your comments. If Porsche built them right in the first place i would be surprised if the OPCs had more than 1 car a year with these faults not every week. Now ten years down the line they still have not cured it. And as for having to buy a warranty because your scared every time you go out your likely to return on a Lowloader is crazy. The only reason the warranty is as cheap as it is ,Maybe Porsche subsidies this alot rather than having to having to do a recall to fix the problem for good.
As my old man used to say to me ,If you let someone catch you once shame on them.Let them catch you twice shame on you.

Oh come off it.

Porsche Tech is right. And he's had the balls to post his real name on his profile.

Buy a high performance car without a warranty and you'll have to pay through the nose when it breaks. Simple.

The warranty is insurance, nothing more. The premium reflects the claim numbers. Porsche can do a full warranty on a £100,000 GT2 for £895. A BMW M3 warranty costs £1800.

Ergo, the losses on BMWs must be heavier.

But a 996, enjoy it, but protect against the worst with OPC warranty. Or risk it, but as Porsceh Tech says, why should a dealer who didn't sell or service the car give a goodwill payment??

There are plenty of other threads on here discussing the merits of warranties and who should pay for what etc.
Let's keep this one focussed on the stats shall we?

Regardless of the existence of solutions (warranty) and whether they are suitable or not, the point of this thread is to attempt to assess the reliability of the M96 996 engine against catastrophic failure.
Each is entitled to have faith or not in the outcome of this thread, but not to wish that it stops. It has already gathered significant contribution and may already have value.

Fastfreddy, Dunit, Ballcock, Tonikaram clap

To the others disparaging this thread, please read the numerous posts defending it (within said thread) and then please go and discuss warranty merits elsewhere. Thank you.

And if you still want to argue, then consider this: It amazes me to think that so many disparagers are effectively saying it is okay for 5%, 10% or possibly more of one's favourite consumer product to have a fly (or dead animal) in it. Some also consider it a "result" that the manufacturer will exchange it for a new one (which might also have yet another fly or dead animal in it). Great! rolleyes

I also note some of the disparagers have not posted their reliability stats, even though they have experiences directly of relevance.

So, may I gently but firmly echo the aforementioned requests: Please let's keep this firmly on topic. If you have no stats to contribute, and can do nothing but disparage, then please leave well alone.

Thank you.smile
