Boxster Spyder
Discussion
Just an update on the roof scenario, I spoke to the dealership this morning to see if they could offer any advice and they pointed me towards Porsche assist.
I had a very nice man turn up within 20 minutes but he was just an AA driver and clearly didn't know anything about the Spyder *sigh*. We are still awaiting the manual for the dealership however he'd managed to contact someone who specialised in Porsche.
There is no way we can get the boot open, out of interest we had noticed last week that the rear boot leaver by the foot sill as you get in the car (on the drivers side) and also on the key fob button never worked. Is this usual? We just assumed it was normal for the spyder and you can only open the rear boot by using the roof mechanism button in the middle console.
Is this correct or do the other buttons work for everyone else? I'm just wondering if this is a fault with our vehicle?
Back to the roof, we established there is a tool kit in the front boot and the roof mechanism is under a little clipped cover, this was easily removed and we were able to manually wind down the locking leaver and put the roof into place and then wind it back up again so its perfectly secure.
Unfortunately the car is still electrically confused and still won't do anything, we've been advised to get the electrics reset and it should work *heres hoping*.

Is it possible to stream music from sites such as You Tube & SoundCloud from your phone to PCM media? I don't tend to store much mp3 music files on phone as prefer to stream or cast music from various music sites.
I play Spotify via my iphone Is that the same.? Sorry I'm over 25 so forgive me
The media button has the option to play Spotify

Yes it sounds like you've got boot switch issues !!I had a very nice man turn up within 20 minutes but he was just an AA driver and clearly didn't know anything about the Spyder *sigh*. The sill button and the key fob should all work fine.
I normally use the lock and unlock buttons (keeping them pressing for 3 /4 secs) to release and do up the roof.
it works really well and saves all that climbing in and out !!
I'm sure once they've sorted your boot electrics issue all will be well.

The boot release on the sill and the keyfob are meant to work ONLY when the roof is unlatched.
Yes You're right......So I guess because the hook is retracted the car thinks the hood is latched !!
Although......I must have had the boot shut and the latch retracted (as it missed the catch), but still managed to put the roof back down, so must have released the boot somehow
How are you guys getting on with your roofs?
I used to have a 987 Spyder and frankly the roof drove me nuts. The wind noise with the roof up gave me a headache, and the putting up and down was like a torture sentence.
I'm looking at buying either a Spyder or Boxster GTS. The only thing holding me back from jumping at a Spyder is the roof... It will be an occasional car, driven only a couple of times a week.
Cheers

It was the roof that stopped me from buying the first one. 981 roof is much better, but see above - some are having some issues. Fundamentally the design is better though in terms of wind noise etc. No problems there....I used to have a 987 Spyder and frankly the roof drove me nuts. The main 2 problems people are having:
- one or 2 members had a problem whereby the catches weren't properly secured. This is avoidable, but I would imagine Porsche might uprate the catch at some point with a recall to be sure?
- on closing the roof, the final electronic stage is sometimes not happening - ie the hook won't catch. Mine did this a few times when I got the car but has now settled in, perhaps as the fabric has stretched.
The roof is much quicker to put up / down than the 987 from my limited experience of the 987 (which bugged me for the wind noise reasons you mention).
I'd definitely get the Spyder over the GTS!

I must admit i got on very easily with the roof from the 'get go' with the 981 Spyder. But I think that has been down to the sales guy at the OPC. I don't charge much It's like anything - its very easy when you know how. it's actually easier than i thought it would be. IMHO it's a no brainer if it's not going to be your daily.
The roof is a lot easier than I thought it was going to be, especially when using the lock/unlock buttons on the key fob, so not having to get in and out to use the buttons on the console.
With the roof up, I don't notice any excessive wind noise, just that cracking exhaust note !!
I've just returned from a Euro Trip covering over 2600 miles, with a couple of 10 hour drive days, and absolutely loved the car.
I also sneaked a test drive in a GTS a couple of weeks ago just to compare.
Had a BIG smile on my face when I got back in the Spyder :-)

I'm liking the key fob press to put the roof down as it's so much simpler but I've not got the key press to put the roof up working yet! Not sure what I'm doing wrong. It is the 'Lock' button I press for 3 sec.+ isn't it?

It only works when the doors are closed. I reach in through the open window and pull the roof grab handle while pressing the lock button on the key. Once the latch is fully engaged, there is plenty of time to remove your arm before the windows rise.I'm liking the key fob press to put the roof down as it's so much simpler but I've not got the key press to put the roof up working yet! It seems the guys in the US don't have this option, as I'm sure the lawyers have got involved !
But here in Blighty "They'll never take our freedom !!"
Well not for now anyway

Agreed the roof is noisy at speeds, but then the whole point of the car is driving roof down and then that is even noisier at speed!I used to have a 987 Spyder and frankly the roof drove me nuts. Not sure how a sub 60 second job putting the roof either up or down is torture though!!
It was always going to be a compromise with the roof set up, but then that was the deal losing the weight and what gives the car it's character.
its quite simple, both the 987/2 and 981 Spyders to a lesser extent are enthusiasts cars and as such a little bit of compromise with the roof and any other aspects have to be tolerated. if you can not tolerate these compromises then it is not the car for you. there are other super cars in the range and perhaps the 987 S or the 981 GTS are the cars for such people.

After watching videos of the 981 roof I have no problem with the mechanism. But the 987 really was a faff, and the flapping noise with the roof up at any speed of 60 was horrendous.DMC2 said:

I never noticed any flapping noise to be honest in my 987, maybe the tension was out of adjustment ??One thing I couldn't help noticing with the 981 roof and maybe it's just being tall, is that my head is pretty close to the exposed roof frame, which I really wouldn't like to bang my head off to be honest !!
