Against what?

JCT Pork, Lotus, Fezza, Aston, Mazda or Vauxhall...

OPC Edinburgh have a list of buyers apparently.

Can see why a 1M isn't the solution Zyp when you have an Alpina in the stable already.

Book value is clearly a nonsense for a vehicle where for the last few months there have been at best a couple of cars for sale in the entire country. Try explaining that when you want a part ex value though...

OPC cars seem to sell the quickest.

Weather lousy again up here, am not expecting to repeat this years New Years Day dawn raid on the Evo Triangle. Did 100 mile round trip to see my Grandad on Saturday in mine but got caught in torrential downpour on the way home - not really the best tool for the job. Roll on the sunshine.

Yeah roof on, have been caught out on the M62 before at this time of year!

I have just had a good look in the rear boot of mine and can't see anything that resembles those 2 rubber blocks.

Hoping to hang on to mine but the white car at 911 virgin comes from a very good home and has been very well looked after. I personally prefer Spyder wheels but no doubt that could be discussed?

I haven't been out to check so apologies if this is nonsense, but didn't someone lose a rubber from the end of the roof hoop (that locates on the roll hoops). Could there be from there?
That might have been me. I have lost one anyway.

Not the same thing.

Happy new year folks.

Not wishing to get involved in an argument about which car handles best, but two of the instructors at the PEC told me it was the best P car they have driven.
This article was posted up on the PCGB forum a couple of days ago. It is from the American Porsche Club and is a comparison between a Spyder (the author's) and a, perhaps unusually, a 981 Boxster with optional sports suspension.

Some of the accolades to which MrD alludes for the Spyder are listed in the article.

I do agree with Alpinestars though - "best" has to be subjective and the Spyder is clearly a different beast to the GT cars.

Rob.Kellock -thanks for the link – looks like I need to be a paid up member to see? :-( You tube searches and links most interesting.
Apologies - the link came from the Boxster section of the PCGB forum but it doesn't work for me either today.

Spyder roof is water proof save for the very worst of rain storms when a few drips might come in. As posted above, the downside to the roof is wind noise at motorway outside lane speeds.

As for market value, today there are only 4 for sale on here, autotrader and the Porsche websites:

white 61 plate 8k miles PDK £42495 Park Lane
white 10 plate 10.5k miles PDK £40997 OPC Sutton COldfield
black 11 plate 8k miles man £38995 private
white 10 plate 20k miles man £33740 private

Zyp says he was offered £34k for his as a part ex.

Well played, looks like we have a winner!

Mine was a stock car. I fell for the Spyder at the RS day at Oulton Park in 2010 when Wilmslow OPC brought one along, I thought it looked amazing. Fast forward a couple of months and Bolton had the same/similar car in their showroom when I took my 911 in for a service. A couple of weeks later we had a deal.

I wasn't allowed to take delivery initially as they said they wanted the car in the showroom for the launch party for the then new Cayenne. When I arrived I was quite pissed off that people were sitting in it. I said to the salesman that they might have put a "sold" sign on it and he laughed and led me outside and through the workshop to show me my car, safely tucked away from enthusiastic champagne drinkers - they had sourced another identical car. To this day, I don't really know which one I ended up with but my car does have an identical twin somewhere.

I took delivery the day PCGB were holding a concours competition at the OPC, drove it out of the showroom and stuck it in the line up. laugh

Ok now trying to work out what exactly everything is and if standard or an option.

Are any of these standard and have I got the details correct?
1. PSE = Sports exhaust with adjustable sound? - YES, option.
2. PCM = Bluetooth Telephone and Navigation? - YES, and a bit more - Porsche Communication Management version 3, option
3. Universal Audio Interface = USB-IPod? - NO, simply an aux in unless you have PCM in which case you get a USB for iPod, option
4. Sound package plus = what this? - Radio delete was a free option (to save weight) sound package plus means if music is fitted to the car that the speakers are slightly better than the standard ones in a Boxster but still rubbish. BOSE was not an option on the Spyder - standard
5. Automatic Climate Control = Aircon - YES - option.
6. Park Assist = rear parking sensors - YES - option.
7. Sports Chrono Package = Is this a sports button? - YES, and stopwatch on the dash - option. Also offers different modes for PDK geared cars.
8. Light weight 19” wheels. standard in silver with silver centres, anything else cost money.
9. Sports bucket seats and Alcantara - standard but beware terminology - bucket seats were standard but sports seats are the leather ones that are less "sporty" than the buckets.
10. Cruise Control - option but can be retro-fitted.
11. Bi- Xenon Headlights - option, very rare.
12. Floor Mats - mandatory option I think!
13. Wind deflector - standard.

No issue with comfort of bucket seats for me on European jaunts. I am 6 foot tall and medium build. They are not easy to get in and out of in confined spaces though or, indeed, at all, depending how athletic you are.

I cannot recall where I heard it, but I believe that the wind deflector is not standard but is a "compulsory option". - I.e. if you specc'd nothing on the car, the wind deflector would be added to the base price.

Most likely a myth!
I have the initial invoice for mine somewhere and I don't remember that - mats were the only mandatory option I can think of but happy to stand corrected.

You get sound package plus with the PCM3.

Ceramics and Xenons are not realistically capable of being retro fitted, it would not be economically viable.

Given the number of cars for sale, you may just have to compromise a bit on your spec, focus on finding a nice one. When you are out driving it with the roof down, you really won't care about what it has and hasn't got, you'll be too busy smiling.

You can already get a 981S for less than the price of a Spyder.

They are certainly different. Whether they are better or not depends upon what you want one for.

Spyder is rare, attracts attention, has a manual roof that lets wind and noise in at motorway outside lane speeds, a firm ride which provides a very tactile, some would say sublime driving experience. It has a lower centre of gravity largely due to the absence of the electric triple insulated glass windowed roof found on its siblings, standard fit light wheels and bucket seats contribute to the effect, along with other weight reduction measures and a modest power hike. Drive one back to back with a Boxster S, 987 or 981 and you would be amazed by how differently it drives.

The Boxster S is a great car, more usable every day and a far better motorway car. In 987 flavour it is a lot cheaper too.

The latest 911V Spyder sold there about a year ago for a couple of £k less so as Spyders add owners and miles, they increase in value!!

With Porsche going down the GTS route for the 981, some people are already billing the Spyder as a future classic. It is a viewpoint not entirely without merit.

Thank you for the reply.

Basically I want to get back into the Porsche fold but this time the car will be a 2nd car and not daily driver. Therefore it needs the "special" feel when I use it. Thought about the GT3 Gen 2 but as a 2nd car and what I would be using it for ( no track days ) it should be a soft top really.

Cheers,

Phil
For my circumstances, it is the perfect second car and I think that it is special enough - if you are used to a GT3 though it may not be - the controls are light and you can drive it quickly without thinking its trying to kill you - I have driven mine back to back with a GT3RS on track and getting back in to the Spyder is like getting back in to a toy in comparison so I do understand why the GT3 boys can be a bit dismissive of it. Doesn't stop it from being a great car though. It's a lot cheaper than a 997.2 GT3 too.

Money no object I'd love to try a GT3 as an ownership proposition. But I have had my Spyder from new and would take some persuading to part with it. In the ideal world I'd have both!
