Boxster Spyder
Discussion
It is quite funny when men who weigh 10kg more than they should get excited about a 5kg weight saving in a car. What does an aircon unit weigh? I bet everyone but about 10 drivers of Spyders are carrying more than that around in pointless flab (that, to be fair, does have a role as insulation but is no good in hot weather).

Oi!Flab? FLAB?!
I'll have you know this honed Adonis figure has taken years of beer and M&S ready meals...
But to be fair, MrD is only about 5' tall and can only weigh about 7 stone wet through ;-)

I'll bite. It's a flicking lightweight Boxster not a Caterham or even a Lotus. It weighs how much? About 1200kg? I don't think aircon or heated seats will make a blind bit of difference. We are talking about 1bhp per tonne difference...
Exactly. Good cars but as I've said before they're a Boxster with a silly roof and some nice suspension settings. There are better lightweight cars and better Pork road cars.
Into the argument I come lol..... Look, the boxster spyder has never been billed as lightweight track car. It is simply meant as a lighter weight focused Boxster. No pretending it is a gt3 type machine. People do get a bit lost when talking about weight saving or pdk saving them 0.2 to 60mph. How irrelevant on most road cars!! And don't get me started on launch control- when is this actually ever of use!
The spyder is a great drive and wrapped in a fairly unique and rare package. The spyder holds it's own as a great product from Porsche. I can only think of the gt3 which raises as much discussion.

For me the Spyder fits the bill perfectly. Having Come from a Caterham I wanted a convertible that could be used on the track and apart from an Elise I couldn't think of another convertible car that didn't lose it's edge when the roof was lopped off (£40k budget). My track times are equal to what I was doing in my Caterham. The Spyder is much more usable than the Caterham and so far depreciation is on par so I don't regret my purchase one bit and for me it's a long term keeper.
PS - I do have buckets and Spyder wheels and no air con which is obviously helping my track times!

I'm pleased with the look and the finish.
Even when they're dirty they look ok - I think being satin as opposed to gloss helps that.
As for the black / silver argument - whilst I think black changes the look of the car quite significantly ( looks lower) I was just getting a bit fed up with them looking filthy and dull not long after cleaning them, and that the look is getting a bit ubiquitous.
My wheels were painted black by my OPC when I bought the car - I paid handsomely for the pleasure but I never felt they were done very well.
I also think silver on white is a bit too pale for my liking (on any other colour I think they look great).

What is a 964rs over a normal 964 ?There are better lightweight cars and better Pork road cars.
993 RS over a normal 993
996 gt3 RS over a 996gt3
I won't say 997rs over a 997 gt3 as it's not much bar bragging rights. ;-)
The cars are so good , Porsche don't really have to change much to make them awesome.
All these cars are a small market if you don't get any of them then yes they are not the right cars to own.
Porsche took more weight out of the Spyder than any of the uber cars I have lised above and brag about it be it 20kg or so.
Even with the 918 the lightweight pack for 40k is still only 1/2 the weight saving Porsche did on the Spyder over a Boxster .
It's only the owners choice to add all the weight back in which many did and say you cannot feel 50kgs, that's there choice.
Horses for course, I have had 2 lotus and a Noble both lightweight cars and I loved the feel over the weighty cars I have owned ESP on B roads and the responsiveness is also better.
as for me losing 10kgs lol I would be dead.
On normal roads a Spyder can keep with 400bhp cars no problem and is faster than my R to 90mph.
Above a ton yes you notice the cars only got 320bhp and a gt3 or 991 would make it look stupid. But below a ton on a B road the Spyders going to shock many a car and is in another league over a Elise.
Also once the PCCB are on a lightweight spec Spyder, the brakes are shocking awesome at slowing the car down.
The braking is more shocking than any car I have owned or ever been in.
No other car has brakes that big 350mm all round with 6 pots on a car weighing 1200kg.
I don't think I can name a car at any price with oem brakes which could out brake a Spyder from 120mph to zero.
The limits when owning a Spyder is going to always be the driver, I bottle out way before my Spyder says no thanks.
