Boxster Spyder
Discussion
Initially I was down for a GT4 at one Opc for 18 months I offered a deposit at the time they said not necessary at such an early stage just put on a so called list I tried a couple of times in the run up to place a deposit not necessary sir as I thought I had a good relationship with this OPC.
Not going into all the gourey details as it got messy.
When I was told I would not get a GT4 as allocation was all taken I was furious as I has enquired so far in advance of production.
After calming down I asked about a Spyder not at one Opc but 3 only to be told all allocation had been taken. I have bought from two of them in past.
The allocation system stinks in my opinion.
Just don't understand why they just don't make more of these cars for interested customers.i am not the only one why take deposits then return them in my book bad business sense.
If you have deposits for 500 cars bloody make them why run the risk of loosing a potential customer especially if they are so hacked off they go to another brand.
Then the kicker they start turning up at Porsche specialist with delivery mileage only for 30/40 k over. I would have loved one to own and cherish and enjoy as an enthusiast.
I am not in the position to pay that much over list and more to the point if I could would I.
Everyone that has secured a GT4 or Spyder good luck and enjoy it.
I know it's not what you want to hear if you have either models but I hope they come down for next year.
Don't think I can wait 3 years so hope they bring out the next Gen Spyder out asap I know a few who weren't lucky.
Enjoy you cars.

tracydeedance In view of your current bad fortune twice are you confident you have now established a firm deal with an OPC for the next generation GT4 or Spyder as you don't want to be having history repeating itself in 3-4 years from now
I think we are due for a considerable return to normality in the not too distant future which means an opportunity to get either of these models at very close to list price should be doable IMO
Good luck either way

I put my deposit down not knowing if I was going to get an allocation as the first allocation at the OPC was sold out. I put the deposit down around February / March 2015 and found out November that I was getting one. From your story it seems to me that you definitely have to change OPC to one you can trust. I have been dealing with the same guys for nine years and although they did not give me any form of guarantee I new that they would do their best for me. It all worked out OK in the end. When I first made the decision to try and get a Spyder I had a feeling from the spec that it would be a bit special although I had no idea they would go up in value. I have lost a small fortune in depreciation in Porsches over the years, it is a bonus that the car has appreciated however the main delight has been the drive. Hopefully you will get sorted next time. Not going into all the gourey details as it got messy.

Sympathies....you have had a rough ride and as others have said you would be recommended to change your OPC and or OPC group owner ( dealerships owned by the same group can be chalk and cheese to deal with).Just don't understand why they just don't make more of these cars for interested customers.i am not the only one why take deposits then return them in my book bad business sense.

Problem is, Porsche are so secretive and OPCs are often the last to know whats happening.....they actually obtain information on their products from social media and car forums....bizarre but true! So your OPC could and probably was unaware of allocation numbers at the time of taking deposits when the car was announced. Insofar as the GT4 was technically a 'flawed' GT car (non GT engine) and a slightly 'unknown' relative to other GT cars previously (911s) neither Porsche nor OPCs would have known the likely demand for this unchartered 'GT Cayman' and hence the reports of some OPCs taking up to 50 deposits both to cover their backs and on the distinct possibility they might even receive so many 'cheapest ever' GT cars.
Post Boltongate, the scrapping of lois and the replacement invitation system for GT and halo cars could actually cause more problems and frustration than it solves.
Time will tell.
I went to show the car to a friend tonight and driving it was a tonic after a hard week at work.that is one of the reasons I wanted this car. You cannot drive it and not feel like a king!
I have had people taking pictures and videos of me driving and the reaction to the car is all good.
I think the man on the street thinks the car is dearer than it actually is.

Thanks for this. I think the reason Porsche probably held back on the 981 Spyder was due to the fact that initially the sales of the previous 987 version was slow. I am sure they would have produced more if they had foreseen demand and by the time they got the feedback the production schedule was already set. This is fortunate for us that we got one but unfortunate for the genuine enthusiasts that were left disappointed.

There was very limited initial demand for 981 Spyder - that's why they didn't make more. Everyone was chasing the GT4 which was massively oversubscribed. By the time most showed an interest in the Spyder it was to late.
Classic case of chasing the wrong girl - if you can look past the sexy blond in the middle of the room , you learn it's the sassy brunette / redhead (change to whatever you fancy) in the corner that turns out to be the really "hot" one !
