Sadly it looks like I will have to let mine go now, as I'm going to need 4 seats.
Or 3 more accurately.
I would love that car. How much under list price are you looking for?
Post brexit correction wink

Don't sell it.. Buy a second car with 3 seats!

Beautiful, my colour of choice if/when PTS is available.

What is the colour code if you don't mind me asking, so I can make a note.

Evening all. Can anyone tell me how much the previous spider cost new and roughly what a good one is going for now? I'm thinking of buying a 981 one but can't help feeling the prices are hugely over inflated.

most were roughly £55-60k new with extras although most sold for about £45k pre-regd new! I sold my very low miles late regd car a year ago and imo prices haven't risen much if at all but have not fallen either! so £45-6k should get you a late regd low miles may be higher for a really good one!
The 981 has been better received but remember the last one arrived during a global slump!

Brilliant day today,Had to take a parcel from Edinburgh to Aberdeen ferry terminal today,so either up the A90 in my Vauxhall combo van, or A93 up the old military road via glenshee and Balmoral in the spyder!! Just broke through 1500 miles as well so car was ready for a proper blast. This is the road that clarkson took the Ferrari f12 along, and Henry Catchpole said it was his favourite road in the world, and no wonder,on a day like today, the hottest day of the year it is totally stunning,on the way Back from Aberdeen I took the road off at ballater and up to tomintoul via the Lecht ski centre.this piece of road is 22 miles of driving heaven, first time I have driven it and was totally blown away, well worth the effort.I got to the road end done a u-turn and enjoyed it even more coming back the other way..a brilliant experience. and the spyder just gets better and better,I am convinced the engines loosening off already and the gearbox seams to be getting even sweeter. Pushing the car a little harder with every drive out now.Covered 350 miles today, got a bit of a burnt head, but totally loving this car,,brilliant.Today is whot this car is all about, empty highland roads, majestic scenery, and a true thrill to drive.

The 987 Spyder was a stripped normal 987. Nothing performance gaining other than fractionally less weight and a very impractical roof that didn't even allow you to drive above a certain speed without it becoming a parachute. A marketing pastiche that lacked thinking and execution - evidenced by heavy discounting to sell them. The opposite is true of the 981 Spyder.

The 981 Spyder justifies its premium from one simple thing: the 3.8 engine from a 911 - a combination never before available, and clamoured for throughout the Boxster's lifetime. 3 pedals only (unlike the 987) and a roof that is both easier to use and offers full usability at any speed; and the 981 Spyder fully justifies the premium. It is the combination people have desired since the launch of the Boxster, in limited numbers with astounding mini-CarreraGT looks, PLUS the last NA flat 6 engine in a Boxster - cements itself in history as what will be the true drivers Boxster.

Thanks GT4p

Spareparts my concern is that other than the engine it's still a boxster, albeit a very good one. It's not a Porsche GT division car and doesn't have a Motorsport engine or suspension or racing pedigree so will fall in value. So if the current ask is 20k over list there is a long way for it to fall for it to find its natural place in the pecking order.

Imo the 987 Spyder is the better car and imo it's only the 3.8 engine that is the draw of the 981! As time goes by the price gap will close and eventually the 987 will price will overtake the 981 but that is at least 10+ years away!

interesting; I've had both and imo the 987 has the better steering feel but is beaten in all other respects, both great cars

You are missing the point.

Whilst the GT4 is clearly more GT focused than the Spyder (GT3 front suspension and brakes), it too has a non motorsport engine but like the Spyder this is irrelevant for road use. That is why the GT4 won Ecoty despite such esteemed company as the GT3RS and Mclaren. Its all about involvement and accessible road performance.

Similarly much more vanilla cars such as the 997 GTS and 991 GTS are residually strong simply down to desirability and last of a line. Factor in the very low production numbers and fun factor with the 981 Spyder together with the next 718 Spyder being turbo (unlike the 718 GT4), and you have an instant classic with the 981 which is currently approaching GT4 values despite being £5k less otr.

Ravi,

The 987 Spyder is unlikely to lose much value even at the current price level due to low production volumes and desirability (as long as you go for the essential options which have been well documented here). If the 981 Spyder had not come along then the 987 would have probably been pushing close to RRP by now.

One thing to bear in mind is what you want the car for as from what I have read here the majority of 981 Spyder's have been spec'd with a lot more 'GT' options rather than the 987 ethos of 'less is more'.

So if you are lucky to choose between the 2, then the only way to decide is by test driving both and decide what you want. However I suspect you will not be disappointed with the performance/driver feel from the 987 and may see why a lot of us are keeping them for the long term wink

I think you need not be concerned , Values are likely to stay strong as there was not a lot of them built and historically low volume built cars hold high residuals , there was much fewer Spyders than Gt4s sold and as all that have said that have driven them they are a pretty special car, In the current market at current price I personally think they are great value, anyone buying one at list got the bargain of the century , I actually think that Porsche could have tagged an extra £20k onto the price tag of the GT4 and Spyder and they would have still sold them in high numbers.

Personally if you want one just buy one drive it and enjoy it and worry later, life is far too short to worry about loosing a few quid ! they may in the short term drop in value , they may rise but you are never going to get burnt badly . End of the day its all about timing and you will only address that when you actually sell , I would guess end of this year they may drop a couple grand but we will see that come back next spring, 2 or 3 years time you could be well up who knows, they are cars not investments , I use mine whenever I can and my mindset is it will be worth what the market dictates when I come to part with it , there is no price on smiles.
