Hi fellow piston heads.. A friend has emailed me with the following.. Can anyone advice:

Porsche Boxster S 3.4
2007

Engine ceased for no apparent reason. Received message on dash saying check engine take to workshop. 2 mins later severe vibration, engine cut out and thick black smoke followed by white smoke.

Told it needs a new engine and that it will cost up to 10k. Also told that models up to 2008 have known engine issues and that only fixed by Porsche after that year. Spoke to another garage that Alexander David put me in touch with for a reconditioned one and told it will cost up to 9k all in. They said they'd take car off me for 2.5k as is after they take a look at bodywork. HELP!!

Christ.. I thought the 3.4 was a safe bet. Is this a known issue on the boxster/cayman??

Queue the deniers "nothing going on here, move on"

Hopefully some people on here will now admit this is common.

So, what, it happens on some cars? Is it any more or less common than say swirl flaps on a BMW diesel of which the number of failures could be many more times in scale and possibly over a much shorter period of time? Is it more or less common then TD6 Range Rovers lunching their gearboxes? I've had 2 Boxsters and to date they have clocked 180k between them.

OP - another alternative is get it recovered to a local specialist. They can fault find and if necessary rebuild locally or crate to another specialist like Hartech. The issue may be entirely unrelated to the assumption of IMS.

May be worth looking at Autofarm too; they also have a good reputation with rebuilds with their Silsleeve liners.

2007 Cayman S here that did the same, welcome to the BBC: Big Bang Club!

If it's been dealer serviced throughout it's life you might get the price down to about 6-7k. I think Hartech charges about that much and I think they do some things that make sure it doesn't happen again whereas Porsche just fit a new time bomb for you.

When I read about these episodes it really really makes me go mad... how on earth could Porsche design an engine so flawed and do pretty much nothing about it over several different generations of cars... I am just appalled.

Thankfully my 997.1 never had engine issues.. but indeed I was running warranty the warranty just in case.. which would still just have put it back as per original with inherent weaknesses..

And now the 991 GT3 fiasco.. I just don't know why I am still sticking with the brand.

I was surprised that the failure rates were so high, after reading the American class action disclosures.

not sure about deniers but there are certainly informed owners who takes steps to mitigate or prevent the known problems. It has been done to death here.

It would be useful to know the specific root cause of this problem.
