As I understand it, the "kick-down" switch at the end of the throttle travel, is also an "upshift inhibitor override", so in manual, if you don't press through the switch position, the engine will just sit on the limiter.

Edit to add: I understood correctly, page 146 in Cayman S manual.

Thanks for the clarity. Makes sense now.

It's a kickdown function. Don't need to jab it or back off as it's based on the pressure and degree of accelerator angle. Also, PDK automatically upshifts at the limiter, even in manual. It's in addition to the kick-down switch at the end of travel.

I've been driving manual cars too long, shows my ignorance.

Seemed like a handy way of engine braking or settling the car in a lower gear (i.e. not accelerating) in anticipation of a bend or something if you don't want to change manually, I'll never use it, prefer the combination of manual changing and the comfort/speed of PDK (apart from the unwanted surprise the few times I've pressed the kickdown switch while accelerating).

I've not been near the limiter yet smile, only covered a few hundred miles. Does PDK upshift right away even in Sport+ (it does in launch control mode, but otherwise)?

Thanks Shifty. Still not home but that sounds like exactly what I have...(from memory)... Interesting though that this sounds like we both have different foot rests to the one depicted earlier in this thread which appeared to be all aluminium?!?
Gents, see my picture (mine, not the one coming from catalogue). We all got the standard one that comes with aluminium edges. THIS IS NOT THE ALU FOOTREST. See the catalogue snapshot above for more clarity.

I've been told in Planet9 forum that there is not any alu footrest for RHD, as I was supposing...

Then your audience for the response you get from your OPC will grow and grow my friend biggrin

From the above it seems it won't unless you've depressed the kick-down switch at the end of the pedal travel, at which point it will change up.

Sure? I thought it bounced on the limiter.

I'd never heard of the kickdown switch being able to be used to *up*shift in this situation. Maybe something to try out next time I'm in a courtesy car. :-)

I corrected that slight misconception at the top of the page - you are indeed, correct.

Yeah, it makes sense if you're asking for more speed.

Ah!!!

All is becoming clear methinks! Worth looking at this link and viewing both pictures. It seems with a manual car you get an all aluminium footrest but with PDK the one that Shifty describes:

As an option Ross. I appreciate the link is US but the two photos seem to show the aluminium foot rest options for manual and PDK. The footrest in the picture matches mine with the PDK box.

Be aware LHD footrest is different from RHD, thefore unless you are 100% sure the one shown is RHD, I would not believe so.

So took my Boxster GTS manual in to my Porsche dealer as the footrest is plastic with aluminium surround and I asked why it was not all aluminium, they are going to talk to Porsche. Looking at the link Cibbie attached it looks like I have the PDK version.

Is a footrest standard in a 981 as I cannot believe the one fitted is worth £179.00

Thanks for that SHIFTY. That is certainly where my thinking had got to. What is the point of paying that money for something that doesn't look what the name suggests! By definition, those of us who specced it are concerned about the details (albeit I had forgotten I had specced it spin)

Guys, have you got aluminium pedals? If yes, at least they are worth £179 wink

Anyway it is a shame that Porsche makes this kind of mistakes (footrest ordered, pedals received), the reason why I am going to ask a refund. This for the benefit of future customers: if nobody complains, they will not change description and clarify these contents.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks Ross. Pedals are non-negotiable so we should have a pucker looking aluminuium foot rest in my view!

Yes...but you've got aluminium pedals instead of standard one.

The refund I would ask is for lack of clarity.

Mine has one (Mar 2014) - but a thin aluminium surround with the bulk of the face in black plastic - as for the brake pedal.

sorry to derail the riveting chat about the footrests in our glorious new cars, but I FINALLY TOOK DELIVERY AT MY DEALERSHIP TODAY!!!!!!!

....and swiftly got REAR ENDED by a cyclist who decided they'd ride without brakes as I was pulling up at my house after collecting the car. Car going back Monday to the bodyshop. Spoiler, bumper and tailgate...

At least I've got the bad luck out of the way quickly right?
