9500 miles on an S and apart from the recent 2 year service oil change, I haven't so much as looked at how to get the oil filler cap off on mine. Assuming the electronic gauge works, it never moves from its 4/5ths full mark? Run-in, warmed up, often +6k, not much motorway use, etc.

Mine, used on week ends only (cold start every week?), careful run in, but peek of 7.5k RPM once more than 1800 miles, first minimum oil level reached warning at 2300 miles, then topped up with 0.5 litre, then warning again after 650 miles, which is sligthly better than 0.5 l / 500 miles I've calculated once I reached the minimum at 2300 miles (as I know with 0.5 litre you fill one bar on the electronic gauge, assuming it was ok / full 4 bars from new).

By the way, what would you reckon as to be done at the first service after one year, oil change for sure, then? How much at OPC? Is it negotiable?

First service is after 2 years, not one year. I asked about them doing an oil change after one year for me and was quoted £350 or so eek

I've done two oil changes so far and it's cost me half of that! Get the oil from Opie Oils and filter/crush washer/o-ring from porsche east london and get my local, but very good independent garage to do the work. They love it and charge me peanuts and I can sleep properly at night knowing I have fresh oil every few k miles and a good nosey under my car for an hour or so each time. Two years to me seems like a silly interval based more on the commoditised model of euroboxes, aimed at apparently minimising running costs rather than a performance car being used the way it should be and serviced accordingly.

EDIT: I should add, I've also got an OPC to price match oil I found online without so much as a slight hesitation when I couldn't be bothered to wait for it to be delivered from Opie. Ask and ye shall get. Not looking forward to being held over a barrel for the first OPC service though...

Depends how you've used it, I've replaced pads and brake fluid too.

The service book says every 2years/20k miles. I don't have a problem with 2 years in principle, but 20k miles seems a long time between oil changes unless the car generally only does long runs and a lot of motorway stuff.

FWIW, every single person I've spoken to at Porsche:

- the salesman who sold me the car
- the bloke who handed the car over to me at Zuffenhausen
- the ex-Porsche mechanic doing our factory tour who'd worked at Porsche in various capacities for 40 years, including with race cars

...all told me that the 20k mile / 2 yr interval for oil changes was fine given the modern tech involved. Specifically the ex-mechanic / tour guide said it was fine, but when I pushed him, he said that for normal use he'd change the oil more often, but only to make himself feel better as he's been doing it so long, not because he thought the car needed it. He'd only do it for the latter reason if he was tracking the car.

It seems to me that provided you use the correct oil etc, for regular use the car really doesn't need it any more often. Since I track mine, I'll do at least one change a year I think, but otherwise, the only reason I think I'd do it would be if I could get a tasty loan car from the OPC to try out for a day or 2 while mine was in with them - an expensive test drive / cheap car rental if you will!

Agreed. A lot of people barely use their Porsches (My father in law has put the same number of miles on his in 10 years, as I've done in one) I track the hell out of the car, and drive it across Germany at the red line... so change the oil more regularly so I can keep doing so without problems. If it was just sat in my garage, I probably wouldn't bother!

Gents, have you ever noticed mist on your GTS headlamps and tail lamps after a long drive (lights on...)?

I have on mine.

only after washing it or heavy rain. Clearly a poor light design - suspect they will root in years to come as moisture in there cant be good.

Hi Trotmant

Still got the motor I see: same here. The GTS must be about the best car this side of really funny money. It's certainly the most drivable motor I've owned. Those who own one will look back in years to come with fond memories, me thinks.

The problem of the ingest of water into lighting units is almost as old as Porsche itself. From the earliest models most 911s suffered similar problems from time to time, whilst 924/944s were notorious for letting water into their rear light pods, sometimes over an inch of liquid could be seen sloshing around in them. Nothing changes.

Too right I still have it. Never understood people who make a purchase decision on a car to flip/hand back/change or whatever in less than a few years.

I love my GTS and don't care about some of its flaws. In fact in little over an hour I get to drive it home from the office through the surrey country lanes. Everytime it puts a smile on my face.

And one thing is for certain I won't be trading it in for a new turbo one next year! More likely I would move to a low miles 991.1 before that happens in years to come.

Incremental service costs at OPC are in my opinion negligible compared with the overall cost of running a fantastic modern sportscar!

I really would appreciate some thoughts from you gents, but you all seem too busy in your business.

I don't have any f***ng experience with any OPC in terms of services and I don't want to pay what they ask without a minimum of awareness.

£300 doesn't seem too unreasonable to me anyway....but I remember somewhere somebody told me £260?

True, but it grieves me to be charged the normal OPC price of £600+ for what can only amounts to an hours work and £40 worth of oil. Trying an interesting courtesy car has considerable appeal - but not at that price. £300? perhaps with a GT4 for the day.

This has probably been asked before but anyone changed from a 997 GTS to Cayman GTS? Would welcome any views, good or not so good. I don't need the rear seats, but I would have to buy secondhand - looking at a nearly new manual demonstrator with good spec. Cost to change circa £20k.
