just given the car a good clean to get the winter grime off and realised that there is film paint protection to the whole car - have to say the bodywork is in very good shape with few chips or even marks.

was planning on giving the car a good polish and finish when the weather warms up but can i use polish over film? i assume not but have no idea.

also, if i ever wanted to have the film removed, is that easy to do? not planning too any time soon but would like to know.

Yes you can and should polish over PPF. Just be careful that anything you use to clean it does not have a petroleum base and should be liquid not paste so it doesn't leave a line on the joins. I was advised to use Meguires liquid wax anywhere - it is quick and easy and seems to do the job. Might look at something more major when the weather warms a little.

are we talking about the same thing though? polish is one thing and liquid wax is another.

lots of contradictory info on whether to use polish on film, from "absolutely" to "no way".

wax - or other LSP - is widely considered safe and can be used as it is on regular paint.

before seeing the film i got some Super Resin Polish and Extra Gloss Protection as I was intending on detailing the car. did my mum and dad's car first as a test and it came out looking immaculate so i was looking forward to doing mine too.

think i need to research this more...

After a NC500 trip my car was absolutely filthy.

Alot of my car is covered in Suntek2 self healing PPF, after the usual snow foam washes, tar remover, bug cleaner, etc etc. I used Super Resin Polish on the whole car and then applied Extra Gloss Protection too. I have used Extra Gloss Protection on it quite a few times it is a really good product and lasts a long tie. I even used it on the wheels before they were Siramik coated.

not sure what film i have. i actually saw an old post in this GTS thread that i believe is from a previous owner of my car. have sent him an email though i have no idea if he still visits here.

i'll definitely apply a coat of EGP but will wait to know more about the type of film i have before polishing.

Mario that looks great. film is great to keep bodywork pristine but the gloss can never be as good as on bare paint.

curious as to whether anyone has considered downsizing - or has downsized - to 19" wheels?

My Porsche Cayman GTS has just had its first birthday so I’d thought I’d write a review of my experience over the first year and 6,000 miles of ownership. Since December the CGTS has been my daily driver as after four years, I’ve sent back my 320d company car and taken the cash alternative.

Just starting the car from cold every morning puts a smile on my face with the PSE having a lovely hollow timbre. I’m sure my retired neighbours appreciate the quality flat 6 sound as their alarm clock at the crack of dawn. With the knowledge of the 718 being destined to have a 4 cylinder turbo, I was desperate to get one of the last GTS’s coming to the UK and Bournemouth did me proud and came through with an allocation. Yes the handling of the Cayman is sublime, and that is still true of the 718 I have no doubt, but for me it was the sound that sold me the car within the first 200 yards of my test drive and that grin inducing exhaust note has not become any less incredible over the course of the year.

I’ve posted it before but the spec of my car is:
- Agate Grey Metallic Paint
- 20" Carrera S wheels painted satin platinum
- Electrically folding mirrors
- PDC Front & Rear
- Aluminium Fuel Cap
- Adaptive Sports Seats Plus (18 way electric w/memory)
- GTS Communication package in Carmine Red
- Sport Design Steering Wheel in leather
- ISOFIX preparation
- Smokers Package
- Seat Heating
- PDK
- PTV
- X73 Sports Chassis
- PCM
- DAB
- BOSE
- Bluetooth Mobile Phone Preparation

The good:
o The sound. The engine dominates the character of the car and it’s personality is always with you, even just pootling through town. I love it and it gets really angry towards the redline!
o The X73 suspension, although it can get a bit bumpy (but never crashy) over our pot hole ridden roads (especially at slow speeds), as soon as the pace picks up it smooths out and the firmness and lack of travel results in completely flat cornering and staggering dry grip levels. Even with the reduced ride height, grounding out the front has not been the issue I thought it might be, albeit I am super careful on speed bumps and inclines.
o The GTS interior package. I know, I know. It’s bloody expensive for fancy stitching and carbon inlays, and it took me a lot of deliberation to part with £2k for it, but I do love it and feel the contrast stitching really makes a difference.
o The adaptive sports plus seats are so comfortable. In July my brother in law and I took the car to the Le Mans Classic and apart from having an epic drive there (the sound in the tunnels is simply amazing!), the seats were so comfortable we got out after a 600 mile drive feeling really fresh.
o The memory package is a god send with me being 6ft 3” and my brunette being 5ft 4”. It makes using the car after her so much easier than manually having to adjust everything each time like we do in the Golf.
o It’s only consumed 1.5l of oil which I’m pleasantly surprised about given the nature of the engine and the, shall we say enthusiastic use it gets.
o The response from everyone has been resoundly positive towards the car. I’m often getting stopped at work or at fuel stations or anywhere in fact as people are genuinely interested and want to talk to you about it.
o Without wanting to get all WhatCar the car is surprisingly practical and the build quality is second to none. My car has no squeaks or rattles which is more than can be said of the two M4’s I’ve demo’ed, both of which were rattly after only a couple of thousand miles.
o I had the car detailed by my detailer prior to me collecting the car. After him carrying out the paint correction, this time I went for GTchniq Crystal Syrem with EXO coating. The finish is still as good as the day it was done with no swirl marks and after a quick hand wash and towel dry the car always looks like I’ve been polishing it for hours. Fantastic product and I couldn’t recommend it more.

The bad:
o My car has been back to the dealers once in its first year as it had an intermittent parking brake warning light. After a day ‘recalibrating’ the parking brake the car was back to full health and it’s not missed a beat since.

The ugly:
o The finish on the black exhaust tips is just starting to look pitted and corroded after the recent salty road conditions.
o I’ve had one stone chip in the year but it’s a big one near the front number plate.

Any options I wish I ticked/changed?:
o Auto dimming rear view mirror. I’ve had this on every car I’ve owned in the last decade as standard and didn’t think much of it until I’m now in a car without it, which rides at the height of van headlights and results in burning your retinas when driving at night! Does anyone know of a retrofit solution for this?!?
o As much as I love the PDK box, given my time again, I’d put up with a tired left leg through my daily trudge through town and would probably go for the manual. If you have to have an auto box, PDK is the best I’ve tried in terms of smoothness and throttle response/ uptake. In that respect it’s way better than our DSG equipped Mk7 GTI. I do miss the interaction and control of a manual though.
o I wish I’d left the steering wheel in alcantara. The leather is very, very smooth and doesn’t provide much grip when you’re really pushing and the palms are getting sweaty.

Overall as I’m sure you can tell, I absolutely love the car and have no thoughts on replacing it any time soon. Last year it’s European road trip was limited to France and the Le Mans Classic but the brunette and I are getting married in June and the honeymoon is a road trip taking in the alpine roads of Switzerland, northern Italy and Lake Como and then onto the South of France. We’re covering between 2,000-2,500 miles, depending on how carried away(!) I get on those Alpine roads over the course of 2 weeks and we, and he car probably, just cannot wait. As a sports car it’s everything I wanted it to be and more and feel very privileged to own one. Sorry for boring you all with my experience!!

We only have a 'lowly' CS, but can appreciate your views. We've been to the alps the last two July's and going again this July, adding in the Dolomites and Lake Garda this time. It's ideal for a two week trip, very practical, and you'll love the alpine passes, and many tunnels!

CGTS16: Cayman GTS and Mk7 Golf GTI in this household too. smile

My car very similar spec to yours but no PTV or X73. Does have auto mirror/wipers though. Bought 'pre-owned' from an OPC. Spotted it with pretty much my ideal spec on the locator and just had to have it. Fortunately Mrs M didn't need too much pressure to agree. laugh

And I feel the same way about mine as you do yours.

For info the exhaust tips should be a warranty item. I know they have issues on other models and are replacing under warranty. They tend to start spotting after 6-9k miles ;-)

Cayman GTS and Mk2 Golf GTI in our stable.

GTS is simply great - I have had it for 8 months now and 4200 miles, having been lucky enough to get one of the last new cars in the UK.

I have PASM rather than X73 and find it a good compromise with some of the roads on which I drive being a bit bumpy.

Mk2 Golf needs no explanation in my view.

I think this will be my 999th post on PH in my tenth year of membership - only this thread and the 'poverty pork' have kept me coming back. Everything else seems to be either about values or some sad and angry people arguing in puerile, pedantic and pointless circles.

So, well done to all GTS owners, enjoy your cars. Once I reach 1000 posts I might just go back to print magazines only.

Booked my BGTS in for a service in July (like to organise early tongue out) and have listed my exhaust tips as something they need to look ref warranty as they're corroding on my car as well which is 19 months old and they've been like that for a while.

Agreed, there are a few of us here championing PASM as X73 seems to get all the attention. The ride quality in 'Normal' with PASM on 20" wheels defies science, it's absolutely superb! Stick it in 'Sport Chassis' and it firms up just enough to decrease body roll etc when you're pressing on. For the mixture of tarmac quality on UK roads we have these days I think it's fantastic. Seriously impressive.

Oh, and to add to the Porsche/hot-hatch club we're running my CGTS and Mrs Twinfan's mk3 Focus RS Mountune.

I think PASM got a bit of a bad name on the 987 (far too stiff in Sport for the road seems to be the problem - though not tried it myself). As you say, superb on the 981 and the nay sayers seem less vocal than in the past - hard not to be impressed if you have actually tried it.

I don't post that much...but +1 for 981 CGTS PASM on 20's - it's very, very good smile
(@Twinfan - we did have a RS Mk3 but I didn't gel with it, hence the CGTS now - but we do have a Fiesta ST3 MP215 which is a bit of fun!)

Definitely, it's a world apart from the 987 version by the sound of it. I love it biggrin

Agreed, the ride on 20" wheels is crazy good!

You should have Mountune'd the RS, makes a world of difference IMHO. Also worth discovering the "extra" drive mode (Track, but put traction control back on and soften the suspension). It gives you Sport mode but with the RDU in a more lively setting!

We find the CGTS and Mk7 GTI a good combo as I use the GTI at the weekend for transporting my trusty mountain bike to various trail centres in Wales and it's a decent enough steer to really enjoy the country roads on the way.

I deliberated for ages over X73 vs PASM and drove cars with both set ups at the PEC at Silverstone and on surrounding roads. For me, I ended up going with X73 and I do love it, enjoy driving on the track and I'm happy to put up with a very firm ride on my cars. I can see exactly why it's not for everyone though so wouldn't knock anyone that chose or wanted PASM as it gives the car a great changeable personality at the flick of a switch and in 'normal' is much more comfortable than X73. The good thing about the cars we drive is that we have the choice to make them the cars we want......
