Hi everyone - I'm new to this forum but have been reading for a few weeks as I'm looking at buying a new Porsche Cayman (fell in love with the new shape when I saw it driving around a few months ago) from a dealer in the M25 area (I'll be buying on finance). I've a few questions and would be grateful for your experiences:

- which OPCs in and around London are the most helpful in terms of giving a good all round deal? Predictably, Porsche Mayfair don't seem to care, Porsche East London are loading on extras I didn't ask for in the financing, but Porsche West London seem to be talking the most sense. Is there any value in contacting others, and which ones do people have good experiences with?

- in terms of getting a sensible deal (am not expecting miracles), where is the best aspect of the deal to push - car price, financing (e.g. dealer deposits) or having extras thrown in?

- any other tips in the buying process? I have an ideal config I'd like to get, but am prepared (within reason) to take a stock car if the price is significantly better.

Sorry if the questions are a bit basic - this would be my first car (purely for weekend pleasure driving), so am learning a lot every day!

I can't help you with which dealer to use, but I did buy a stock car in June, which worked out about 3k better in terms of the deal. The fact that it was exactly the colour and wheel combo I wanted with most of the spec made it an easy decision.

I came from a 2006 Cayman S, so I'm not overwhelmed with the performance, but it's a really good car. Some people will tell you it's slow, but once you get into the top end of the rev range it''s quick enough.

PDK is a big change from manual - but if it's your first car you won't know any different. I'd imagine you'll find it a bonus in London traffic.

Reading and Leicester have a good rep on here.

But really, its all about the financial deal. I would certainly be trying a few different dealers and going with the lowest cost.

Hi im on my second Porsche in 24 months previously i had a 2.7 Boxster PDK i shopped around for a nearly new one 2k miles got a great deal from Porsche Bristol try them ask for Jason say i recommended (Ian from Halifax).

I would recommend that you source the car from anywhere in the UK, as you elude too there is a great deal of difference in the "interest" shown by dealers. I have shopped round and believe me I have just got a great deal o a 911 S 2k miles it would retail at 95k i got it 4 months old for 80k.
If your paying for it monthly as i am it only matters how much a month will it cost me a month for vehicle A against B.
I would seriously advise you to look at a x demonstrator anything with a RK reg is pre registered by Porsche (HQ UK) and is usually a good spec. and you should be able to save at least 10% over list.

I can also thouroughly recommend Porsche Glasgow ask for Jenna great girl and will get you a good deal, dont be intimidated by the the Porsche dealerships THERE IS A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE not in the cars but in the deals.

The PDK is awesome its like driving a Playstation I have had manual 911 (7 GEARS OMG) and manual Caymen and Boxster as courtesy cars and I do find the manual gears hard work !! It may be for the purest but it ain't for me !! If your going for options go for the multi function steering wheel (the sports design one looks better though IMHO) as the heater buttons and radio etc are behind the gear shift and Dynamo would struggle to adjust them never mind yourself on the M25 @ 07:45 !!

So in conclusion ring around be specific on spec from my experience youll get about a 50% response rate and then youll soon find out who wants your business and they do do monthly targets so haggle till the end.

I bought a brand new cayman 2.7pdk last December and have been very pleased with the decision. Key things I found:

Drive a few examples first, everyone has different interpretations on spec (unlike the previous poster, for me the pdk needs sports design steering wheel to work properly but we're all different and there's no right or wrong).

Once you've got your spec, start ringing round dealers. Some will be dismissive but you'll get a bite from one. Ignore any bs as you would with any other dealer.

Negotiate hard, 10% is achievable as a discount but you may need to take porsche finance (notoriously poor rates) to close it. You can settle this immediately without penalty using cheaper finance if that's your preferred funding method.

Think about gap insurance, it may or may not be for you. If it is, look at alternatives to the porsche product and compare/negotiate accordingly.

You'll need circa 3k as a deposit payable on credit card if you choose (porsche and porsche finance only accept credit card payments in 3k increments max).

A stock car may yield a better discount.

Go buy and enjoy.

Here is my experience OP - I purchased my S from Hatfield a few months back, unfortunately the sales guy I dealt with has now left, as he always pushed his management for a good deal. He found me a brand new car from stock, with all the extras I wanted.

I have no view what sort of discounts people on here have received, however he gave me the same trade in price for my 987 as I purchased it 2 years previous and effectively got all my extras free on the new car. The caveat was I needed to get it signed and delivered before their quarter end...

I was told they were one short of their new car target and the salesman was to throw everything at it. Right place, right time, however if you do a bit of investigation, you can get yourself into a similar position. The only downside is whether you get a car that fits your needs with the right extras.

The way I have always driven the best deal is with finance. Set a monthly payment which is challenging for the dealer, therefore giving them allot to do to match it. Also research their quarter ends and walk in a few days before the end of the month.

I reckon October/November will be quiet after all the September deliveries..

I dont class myself as a sporty driver (safe and competent yes) i would never track the car as I know my limitations and im not even very good on a Playstation or X BOX come to that !! But I do like the extra competency that the PDK gives drivers like myself.....eg I had a Carrera S manual courtesy car and the back end kicked out in Tesco car park oooops....... I need every aid they can stick on it !!! But each to there own the manual better suits the purists......

Manual gearboxes cause the back end to kick out on 911s? I have now heard everything!

Getting on the phone with a specific spec shows you know exactly what you want and are close to buying. Some tried to slightly deflect me with a in-stock car but not quite to my spec. I was prepared to wait to get my desired dreamcar. I took 3 months to negotiate and order a car and another 3 months for delivery

[B] I aimed for 10% off a built to order car and got it. I had to take Porsche Finance to get this. IIRC 7.9% on HP. Yes I settled and transferred to my bank, 5.1% with First Direct at the time. However I left it for a month as the dealer gets their commission clawed back.
I feel that in being honest and 'good' with my OPC will get me a favourable deal next time around.[/B]

I paid £2k deposit on a credit card. I have not heard of '£3k increments'

A stock car may yield a better discount.

Im in Halifax.
The Halifax Tesco is notorious for its sharp bends and adverse cambers (its my excuse) add some rain and inexperience and kick outs will happen....

Thanks everyone - really helpful! My negotiation skills clearly isn't quite as good as those who have secured 10% discounts! I think I will end up with a 5% discount on a built to order car bought on finance. OPC Mayfair were basically walking away at just below that level, though some other dealers still seem interested and should hopefully do a deal with OPC East London soon.

If that all works out - they are telling me the car would arrive Nov/early December, which works fine. In the meantime, have people been on and enjoyed the Porsche track day - is it just hard sell, or is it a fun day out?

If your new car arrives in December I would seriously consider not taking delivery until 1st Jan. This will then be a '2015' car and will be worth a few hundred pounds more when you eventually sell.
The Porsche Experience day was a great day out and no 'sell' at all.
They will let you push the car to the limit on the handling track.

Hi,


Want to ask opinion about some options for a new Cayman without starting another topic.

More or less settled with specs. Was seekeing for opinion about steering wheel in another thread and ended up with Sportdesign.

After the final test drive decided not to go with PSE, sound is good enough as it is. And if want more later on, better go aftermarket, I guess.


One thing I still not sure is should I take reversing camera or regular parking sensors good enought. Dealer here don't have any car with a camera, actually even have not sold any with this option...

Does anyone had experience on this?
Mirrors are so small on cayman that don't give real picture of what is going on in the back.
Sensors are ok for large objects, but afraid to hit small posts or kerbs given how low a car is.
