I am looking into getting a set of winter wheels for my new Cayman S which arrives Dec this year..

Looking at my Cayman Brochure which I must admit I picked up when 981 was launched last year and it says that TPMS is an option but on the configurator it says it is standard?

Have they changed the spec of this from launch or is one incorrect?

If it is std. what errors do you get when you put a set of wheels that don't have TPMS sensors in them?

I suspect it has, as the law changed and everything must have them

Further £200+ to the cost of a winter wheel set, I'm either going to put up with the light for a couple of months a year on my latest BMW 1 series....last one didn't have them, utilised a speed dependent system to check pressure loss, or try removing the fuse!

I thought some sort of TPMS was now mandatory on certain new cars nder some EU directive, so that might explain why it is standard on the configurator but wasn't when the brochure was produced?

Put your config code into the model configurator then have a look at standard equipment.

Mine (CGTS) shows TPMS as standard.

I have a 981 Cayman S without TPMS but it still has a warning to tell you there is a flat tyre but it doesn't have the pressure sensors and the TPMS display that gives individual pressures.

In the UK all new cars sold after 1 November 2012 have to have proper TPMS. So you won't find a UK Cayman 981 without it.

I believe USA allows the rubbish system which gives a warning only when a tyre is so low it's probably damaged beyond further useful life....

Is it possible to run a winter wheel set without sensors installed? Any way to disable the monitoring?

Is it just a warning message you get?

My UK delivered Cayman S was built in July and it doesn’t have TPMS. When I ordered it TPMS was an option that I didn’t choose but then changed my mind so I asked the dealer if it was possible to add it after my spec was locked. The sales guy asked the technical guy if it was factory fit or possible to dealer fit and I was told that it had to be ordered from the factory so I couldn't have it. So I don't have it. Further evidence of me not having it is that there is no screen that displays tyre pressures.

Maybe the 981 Cayan was introduced before November 1, 2012 when the legislation says all new models have to be fitted with pressure based TPMS.

Is there a way you can tell if a set of wheels have TPMS externally?

Are the valve stems always those silver ones or can you get the std. black ones that are on most wheels without?

Same here, Oct '13 'S' with no tpms of any format. One of the very last 'no tpms' cars - will be worth a fortune in the future wink

Here is the full detail,

"EU TPMS legislation: As of 1st November 2012, all new-type vehicles will be required by EU law to have a pressure based tyre pressure monitoring system installed. This applies to the road wheels, not the spare.

"By November 2014, all new passenger vehicles will have to have TPMS installed by the manufacturer."

So it's possible that as the "EU type approval" of 981 was BEFORE November 2012 the TPMS requirement didn't become mandatory until somewhat later.

My July 2014 build Cayman S must be one of the very last without the new fangled "digital" technology. I find the analogue feel I get through the seat of my pants for individual tyre pressures far superior to this new legislated "Audi feel" tech.

Keep an eye out for it in the PH classifieds soon. It's being replaced by a GT4 that unfortunately has the full monty TPMS as standard.

This ^^^

The law changed in 2012 for new models not new vehicles. It became mandatory for all new vehicles late 2014. Hence why you could still buy a car in 2014 with no form of TPMS.

Absolutely have to agree. And personally I love the feel of a manually operated stirrup pump. I can't ever see me ever going to an electrical one - they seem to take all the skill out of inflating tyres. I really can't understand why someone would let a garage do it for them.
