I am currently looking for a 2011ish Cayman 2.9, I nearly purchased one from OPC Guildford a few months back but I felt I hadn't done enough research to make an informed decision, cost was around £28k.

Seems to be a lot more Boxters for sale at the moment than Caymans, can I assume this is because with winter approaching people are buying Caymams (hard top for winter)?

Am I right or is their little to no correlation in my theory!?

Would late winter/spring 2015 be a good time to be looking if more are coming onto the market?

Being honest I wish I had got the one from Guildford now, win some, lose some!

Thanks

I'd imagine:

1) There are more Boxsters than Cayman as the Boxster offers more and was cheaper to buy.

2) It's coming into Winter so Boxsters probably hang around longer hence, so there will seems to be a larger number relative to Cayman.

I bought a cayman in the summer, there was limited stock even then. Believe it or not these cars are quite rare.

Would agree with that. When I traded my in for a 981, I got back what I paid for it, they only had 1 other in stock at the time..

Generally rare cars and even rarer in the spec / age / mileage / price range you're looking at. Many cars will not be up to stratch to be sold by an OPC either. The 2.9 was significantly outsold by the 3.4 I believe and only in production for about 3 years?

Having said that as a seller I think relatively few people are looking to sell at this time of year, more are waiting for spring / early summer. Personally I'd not discount the 2.7 either, 99.9% of the fun and significantly less expensive.

Thanks for the feedback, makes very interesting reading.

When you say not up to scratch to be sold by OPC, do you mean these cars would be of a superior condition to perhaps a specialist?

Deprecation seems to be very good on the Cayman, hopefully when I find one I wont lose to much in my time owning!

Hi Chris, some specialists have equally high standards but its likely to be too many miles, servicing not 100% to schedule or with non-OPC etc. When I was looking for mine I found that many people's interpretation of FSH was rather different from mine. I actual had an interim service done (after 1 year) ratther than waiting for the full 2 years.

With my last car a BMW M135i after a year when I called up to book a service they almost refused to book the car in as it didn't need servicing for another 13 months sir!

This will be my first Porsche so the peace of mind offered by buying from OPC is critical to me, how long have you owned it for and what did you buy!

Buying from OPC, peace of mind? Much to learn you have young Padawan.

You’d be far better off mentally and financially buying a car privately with an existing warranty.

Unless of course you enjoy paying for a handshake and then being kicked down a flight of stairs?

I've had my car for 18 months and bought privately - I'm gutted to say that losing my work parking permit means I'm simply never going to get to use the car. Its a 2008 2.7 Cayman.

It was my second Porsche (first being a 968 Sport) and I certainly did my research - particularly in relation to that particular car (spending lots of time on the phone /email with OPCs etc and inspecting the car) prior to going ahead with the purchase. It has been totally faultless and a very inexpensive car to own and run. Also back on the 17" wheels (I bought it on 19") it has much more of the playfulness of the 968 and is so much more fun.

Oh seriously!? I thought OPC would be the safe bet! The only so far I have found is in Cambridge that meets the requirements but not ready yet with a long winter in Hampshire ahead!

Strange not having a car at the moment I have had a car since I was 17 now 26 but even though I use the wife's car it feels odd not to have my own!

Dont be fooled by the badge or the fancy coffee machine in the dealerships, at the end of the day they are car salesmen. Some of their used examples are nice, some are a bit meh and others I wouldnt touch with a badge pole.

Perform all the normal checks you would do if you were buying private or at a small independent.

Hi All,

I too have been looking for a Cayman seriously since early March and have to say that the availability since the end of September has been scarce. I fell in love after test driving a guards red 3.4S but stupidly didn't put a deposit down on straight away and by the time I called back it was already sold. Im not interested in buying privately without OPC warranty but expected that there would be higher availability as we approach winter but have been thus far disappointed.
