Today I did this to my sub £6k 986. weeping

I'm now fretting over whether my insurance will write it off.

Bumper, wing, condenser and headlamp all kaput. Radiator wasn't holed but is pushed back.

Unlucky mate. Doesn't look great if your going to stick it through insurance. Best of luck.

Not a good Christmas present.... hope you're OK?

Was it a fault accident?

If not, ebay for the parts and a good bodyshop light on work after Christmas with no insurance involvement will sort it?

Unlucky fella.

Sorry to say it, but that is a write off.

+1

I wouldn't have thought that would be a massive cost to repair using second hand parts. Probably biggest cost would be in the paint if you can't get them in the same colour. However the car looks like it's Lapis Blue & you may be lucky getting the bumper & wing in that colour off eBay as its a fairly popular colour.

Soory to hear of your misfortune.
Wheel looks a little buckled from the picture. If you are handy with the spanners and the chassis is straight you could probably get the car back on the road for less than 2K

May just be the photo but the wheel looks rather positively cambered!

The good news is I'm fine physically. I was at fault and it was (eventually) a low speed crunch into the side of a bus. The rear wheel arch of the bus is what did most of the damage.

Here's a better pic.

Now for my options, noting that I don't have a place where I could spanner it myself.

At it stands I have asked the ins co to repair it and they are due to ring me tomorrow to arrange to pick it up and leave me a courtesy car. The wheel is OK but I'm not certain about the frame and suspension.

So my options are:

1. Let them take it to their repairers where no doubt they will write it off.
2. Tell them I've changed my mind and try to get it fixed at a body-shop.

I'm swinging between them at the moment. Head says write it off and get a shed whilst I look for another. Heart says try and get it fixed.

Unless there is a reason why you are keen to keep it no matter what, then let it go and move on.

Let them write it off and see if they will sell it back to you?

This! Buy the salvage.

You'd fix that for a grand of bits off ebay and it's not a rare colour so extremely likely you'd be able to score the bits you need in the correct colour. Do you really not have anywhere to work on it? That could be fixed on the street in a day, it's not going to have tweeked the chassis leg judging by the photos.

The bullet has been bit and the bits have been bought. Let's hope the weather warms up a bit.

And how do I remove the carbon canister so I can take the wing off? The workshop manual I have mentions it but doesn't say how.

In my experience your insurance will still go up, as you have reported it to them so you now have an incident on your file.

Someone once left a mark on my v8 Vantage, I called insurance to tell them while I worked out what to do. Did not claim as I decided to get bumper repaired and painted. Insurance still shot up, and despite my arguing I had 3 years of the incident on my file which was taken into account when calculating premiums.

So just be careful smile

Did the bus not also need any repairs?

Oh yes, my protected NCB is going to take a hit, down to four from nine I think. The bus will have had some work done on it, there was a dent in the rear wheel arch but they probably fixed that with a three pound lump hammer.

man maths time then?

Looks like a £3-4k bill to me plus a yearly reminder via the insurance uplift.

How much is the car worth for parts ?

If it was protected, you will still have 9 years NCB, but the initial premium they start the calculation from will be higher. If you've been told it's going down to 4 from 9, then it wasn't protected.

I had a minor bump in 2012 where no payout was made, but the insurance co. was informed because I was suspicious of the other party, thankfully it goes off my file in May.

Definite man maths.

The (mostly s/h) parts will be coming to about £650. I'm going to have a go at spannering it myself, since it is just bolt on stuff. I've found out about the carbon canister, which if it is like the one on the 987 is a one nut fixing; slide forward and unplug the lines.

I haven't actually been told about the NCB, I don't think I fully understand what the implications are. The insurance is up for renewal next month so I'll just have to wait with bated breath.

Hope it goes OK for you.

Checking my Direct line booklet (page 2), it says a claim will reduce my NCB from 9 years to 3 in one go. Different companies may have different rules of course.

Here we are, she's looking OK again. Haven't fixed the aircon yet but bumper, wing, side indicator and headlight all replaced.
