Having only had the car a couple of weeks, I hit Silverstone today and was not disappointed.

Usually faff around trailering a race car around, so it was heaven to get up 40 minutes before start time and drive the Cayman straight to the circuit. It was also quicker than pretty much anything there today and surprised me just how good it was!

The stock tyres on the 20" rims weren't great. While they aren't ruined, they took some punishment and seemed to overheat quite easily.

So I am now thinking of getting some 18" rims to put on for trackdays and keep the 20's for normal road use.

Those who have experience, what is the best tyre arrangement to go with for Cayman 981's on track?

Thanks for any advice...

I always get the geo sorted, so the choice of tyres and wheels is very much going to be in keeping on a proper track setup.

Incidentally do you have any geo/camber recommendations?

Will be doing several a year.

I've always had fast road / track geo done on all my cars as its a 50/50 mix.

Today the outside tyre wall has taken a hammering so I'd *at least* like to get things right in this regard with the camber/geo.

An out of interest question for future reference, does it make any difference if it is still in the original 3 year warranty or if it is the 2 year approved used warranty that Porsche provide. General interest as I realise the OPs car will still only be 2 years old at most.

Thanks cmoose, does seem odd that fitting of say a brake mc could invalidate a warranty claim on say a failed engine but as you say would you want to have that argument.

My cars only a few months old so I'd definitely be looking to try and remain within warranty boundaries at this stage.

I guess I need to see what the geo place can do for me on stock adjustments?

I assume as much camber as poss to try and help the outer edge of the front tyres?

Another option is to fit SS, if you haven't already got it. Not only will that reduce roll and camber change because the springs and roll bars are stiffer (and the car is 20mm lower) , it will also reduce understeer because the rear springs and ARB of the car are stiffened more than the front. The rear ARB is 46% stiffer than standard. That should all help the front tyres a bit. Obviously that will give potential ride and ground clearance issues and only you can judge whether that's a problem for you personally. If that's done by an OPC then no warranty issues should arise (though if they find out you've tracked it they may well be less "helpful")

From what I read on Planet9, there is more camber adjustment on the 981 than on the 987.

Really useful - thanks for linking.

Will be taking my car to my usual place this week to get the negative camber set as far as I can take it on the stock adjustments.

Also going to fit the Super sport tyres, as someone else mentions them on the above thread and already planned to add them.

I might stick with the 20" wheels to start with on the above just to see how it goes as it would be good to have a comparison with the same wheels and tyres before i make further changes.

You won't go far wrong with Super Sports. I use them and imo they are about as good a road tyre as you can get.
