Have to say this is tantalizing. Cayman GTS was my "compromise" for not waiting for a Boxster Spyder. I do have multiple GT4 deposits here in the US (and should get an allocation in the next 2 months), but once this is officially revealed with specs I may revert back to the Boxster Spyder. Not sure. The Cayman has really exceeded my expectations and is a bit more practical, but the whole reason I wanted a Spyder because it was a bit "crazier" -- not harder edged, but more special. More compromising. I live in an area where I can legitimize an A/C delete as well to save another 14 or so kg, and only regretting it maybe one day a year.

Will have to wait for the specs/reveal photos in April, but I might jump from the GT4 lists for a Spyder.

For me, the Boxster GTS is probably ideal, I totally buy into the Cayman GT4 or would if I could, but a Boxster Spyder with the GT4 mechanicals and especially with the Boy Scout soft top is too nuts and too impractical. The best Porsches have always been the functional ones not the loony ones.

What is being pointed out is the restricting is not by ecu but by air intake and exhaust
Don't shoot the messenger !
The GTS gets 430 bhp from the same engine, makes the GT4 seem even more stunted.

The best residuals long term have always been with the "loony" ones and the Boy Scout roof is a vast improvement over the 89 911 Speedsters which wasn't even guaranteed to be waterproof and was almost a 2 man job to raise and lower the bugger none of which has stopped it becoming seriously collectable and way over original list price of £55k back in the day

Found this in the background of a 991.2 photo from South Africa.
You can clearly see that the Spyder has the Alcantara GT4/GT3RS steering wheel with the red interior and Sport Chrono. Nothing shocking or unexpected... Just worth noting.

Lots of speculation over at pff.de claiming that the Spyder was delayed and will launch post facelift with a turbo 4... presumably because Porsche is trying to make the most out of the available production capacity for the GT4.

Röhrl has stated months ago that he ordered a new manual Boxster Spyder because the "new turbo engines sound like a beetle and they won't make flat sixes anymore", so clearly it was planned to launch with the B6. If there's no news on 1. April then it seems likely that the car will come later on this year with the facelift.

That would be disappointing but as the Cayman and Boxster are made at different factories I don't see production capacity as an issue which will affect Spyder. I would also be surprised if Porsche launched a special edition at the start of a new model run - interest in the new models would normally be high enough and would not need this form of additional marketing support.

There is so much speculation on PFF its out of hand... Some still think there is both a Boxster Spyder and Boxster GT4 being launched. Honestly don't believe anything that's posted there. The speculation is spiraling out of control. Some are even saying that the Spyder will have a turbo.
This is going to be a long 10 days!

I take your point swimd but can you believe Porsche would launch a "s........y" engine, I can't and don't undersdtand this prejudice against turbos. They have previous in the form of 944 Turbo and that was widely acclaimed in its time.I have a twin turbo 2 litre in my BMW 328. It produces almost as much power as Boxster S was a few years ago and is a great drive - not as responsive as my Spyder obviously but still fun and a nice noise above 4000 rpm. We are all entitled to our opinions though. It will indeed be an interesting (and long) 10 days

the purpose of turbos used to be for power, not trick emissions.

thats the difference.

Here is the unofficial interview with Walter Röhrl I was referring to. I don't know him as somebody who is very critical about Porsche in general, so when he says statements like this:

http://www.wheelsmag.com.au/news/1502/exclusive-po...

Walter Roehrl said:
“At least it’s not a four-cylinder turbo like in the next Boxster. That sounds like a Volkswagen Beetle, I’m not kidding you! I tell the guys, ‘You’re joking with this sound, right?’ But they just say they are working on it. I’m sure they will get it right.”

“We need to go to turbocharging to reduce emissions,” he said. "How else can we get C02 levels below 95g?"

“But no matter how good a turbo engine is, it can never have the pure response of a naturally aspirated engine. This is the reason I bought a Boxster Spyder, because engines like this won’t be made anymore.”
... then I feel I have reason to assume that the new turbo four will be a "hard sell" for Porsches marketing department, even though it will indubitably have a lot more torque and power than the current N/A flat six engines.

Fair point I think if you are using your car on track days (which I don't) , you may notice the lower response but in driving on public roads at the acceleration/speeds one can normally achieve I really don't think that the difference is that great or noticeable. The overall dynamics and sound of the new models will I am sure be up to usual Porsche standards and Walter does say "I'm sure they'll get that right"!! Anyway, exciting times !!
