I take your point swimd but can you believe Porsche would launch a "s........y" engine, I can't and don't undersdtand this prejudice against turbos. They have previous in the form of 944 Turbo and that was widely acclaimed in its time.I have a twin turbo 2 litre in my BMW 328. It produces almost as much power as Boxster S was a few years ago and is a great drive - not as responsive as my Spyder obviously but still fun and a nice noise above 4000 rpm. We are all entitled to our opinions though. It will indeed be an interesting (and long) 10 days
Here is the unofficial interview with Walter Röhrl I was referring to. I don't know him as somebody who is very critical about Porsche in general, so when he says statements like this:http://www.wheelsmag.com.au/news/1502/exclusive-po...
Walter Roehrl said:
“At least it’s not a four-cylinder turbo like in the next Boxster. That sounds like a Volkswagen Beetle, I’m not kidding you! I tell the guys, ‘You’re joking with this sound, right?’ But they just say they are working on it. I’m sure they will get it right.”
“We need to go to turbocharging to reduce emissions,” he said. "How else can we get C02 levels below 95g?"
“But no matter how good a turbo engine is, it can never have the pure response of a naturally aspirated engine. This is the reason I bought a Boxster Spyder, because engines like this won’t be made anymore.”
... then I feel I have reason to assume that the new turbo four will be a "hard sell" for Porsches marketing department, even though it will indubitably have a lot more torque and power than the current N/A flat six engines.“We need to go to turbocharging to reduce emissions,” he said. "How else can we get C02 levels below 95g?"
“But no matter how good a turbo engine is, it can never have the pure response of a naturally aspirated engine. This is the reason I bought a Boxster Spyder, because engines like this won’t be made anymore.”
I would guess that the majority are people who just want the Porsche and so to them as long as it is quick they won't be worried that it has a very efficient turbo charged engine
instead of a NA one.
Some surveys have shown that many people have no idea which are the driven wheels on their cars so there is probably a fair chance they will not know the difference between forced and NA anyway.
He was talking about the 987.2 spyder which he owns and has since 2011 and not one he has ordered

4 pot turbo is a step too far for me though! no less than 6 cylinders!
Go on youtube and search for porsche fuhrmann 4 cam 1500cc, flat-4, 150bhp. Think you'll find it's probably the best engine Porsche have ever produced.

No I doubt that... I don't think he owns a 987.2 Spyder and he mentioned in a late 2014 PH interview that he ordered a Spyder. Trying to find the article but I can't seem to find it...Found it:

But for myself, if I want to buy a car, and I want to say I keep this car for the next 20 years, I would always take a manual gearbox, because I believe more, I trust more in a manual than in a double clutch. I've just ordered a Boxster Spyder with a manual shift - and I know that it's working, it's perfect, and it's up to me how I handle things.

Does this sound a bit like they don't know what's happening? Would the 'mule' look so complete in the spy shots if it was going to be 2016?

Noticed something...
Up until recently the 987.2 Boxster Spyder microsite has been active (not sure why Porsche kept it active this long).
I checked it last week and it was there... Now, when you do a web search nothing comes up.
A sign of something coming?

Carscoops is listing the Boxster Spyder debut as a possibility for NYIAS... It also lists it as Non-confirmed. Press debuts are scheduled for 4/1/2015... So it is possible.

Which can only mean the Flat 4 Turbo debates are all wrong and my original info 3.8L 375 bhp looks like coming good still Carscoops is listing the Boxster Spyder debut as a possibility for NYIAS... It also lists it as Non-confirmed. Press debuts are scheduled for 4/1/2015... So it is possible.
I'm sure it will be great, but I don't like:-
1. The PDK
2. The DIY roof
3. The stick on Porsche badge
4. The red nylon door pulls
5. The humpback look
5. The fact that however good it is, if we are talking about hardcore sports cars it will never be as good as the Cayman equivalent, so why bother.
I think that a well specced Boxster GTS is a better package, though if they told me it was coming as a turbo 4 I would see red.

For me, the Boxster GTS is probably ideal, I totally buy into the Cayman GT4 or would if I could, but a Boxster Spyder with the GT4 mechanicals and especially with the Boy Scout soft top is too nuts and too impractical. The best Porsches have always been the functional ones not the loony ones.
The best residuals long term have always been with the "loony" ones and the Boy Scout roof is a vast improvement over the 89 911 Speedsters which wasn't even guaranteed to be waterproof and was almost a 2 man job to raise and lower the bugger none of which has stopped it becoming seriously collectable and way over original list price of £55k back in the daycardigankid said:

2. Drive with the roof off
3. It's lightweight
4. It's part of the concept and a nod to GT cars
5. The humpback look is what makes the Spyder to unique (and is a nod to the earlier Porsche Speedsters)
6. You can't count - because wind in your hair/or lack of it with a 6 howling away is part of the Spyder experience
If you don't like it, buy a Cayman.
