981 Spyder - Speculation
Discussion
It's really encouraging to see Porsche make more use of the wonderful 981 chassis, both Cayman with the GT4 and now the Boxster Spyder. Having said that, primarily because there is no PDK option I don't regret opting for the GTS. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but the rear styling does nothing for me, as others have said less cohesive than the 987 Spyder albeit with a far more practical soft top than before.
I'm assuming there's no speed limitation with the hood on this time?
I have to say that I quite like it, and it looks good value if the buckets are standard.
That said, the 987 Sypder definitely looked better. But then it's one of the best looking sports cars ever imho.
I think the more rounded, organic design of the 987 lent itself better to the Sypder conversion than the more angular 981 design.

The 987 especially the gen 2 in my opinion is more organic and true to the porsche heritage. It has more feline and slender lines, there is something not quite right with the 981, especially from the rear. I cant put my finger on what, but its not quite "porsche".
Agreed. The 981 looks too high & narrow at the back. To my eyes the 996/986 has aged well- much more cohesive & feline.MDT48 said:

The 987 remains, in my view, the better looking car because it is more Porsche-ish and so less generic.

I prefer the new one, probably becasue overall the 981 design is so much better and more muscular looking than the 987 IMHO, also does away with the naff Porsche stickers down the sideCan someone explain why Porsche see fit to overlay the whole of their videos with music so you can't appreciate the sports exhaust that they even highlight in the sunny video above.
How over subscribed is this one going to be ? I do like the look of it in 981 guise, not quite on a par with the original but close enough to be interesting.

What would have been a real trick would have been a manual roof like the common or garden Mazda MX-5, which you can drop or raise, manually, from the drivers seat without even looking round never mind stopping and getting out. The only restriction on the speed at which you can do this is the torsional rigidity and muscle strength of your left arm.
The reason they didn't do this was to retain the double bubble speedster look, which is a styling cue over functionality decision I understand and know I should like, but, er, don't. Suppose you are cruising along the Autobahn on a nicish day with the roof down, and suddenly hit a rain cloud. Do you a. Carry on and accept that your leatherwork is going to take a soaking with tincture of lorry spray and road dirt b. Accelerate to in excess of 150mph so that airstream prevents that or, c. Pull onto the hard shoulder and put the hood up in the approved manner. None of those options appeal, so I think like the last one, this is very much a car for the Californian climate or the collector.
That's not to say I wouldn't have one if I could because I would bet a large sum it has been tuned and set up to provide excitement. it is also going to have a great deal of street credibility.

Thanks hadn't picked up on that thread, doesn't seem too popular judging by that either.
Still don't understand the music element though.

If I was in any doubt, I am no more! And the dealer phoned me today to ask if I would like to come to the dealership to spec the car together - nice touch!
