981 Spyder - Speculation

Yes but the car sounds far better with the roof off and with the wind blowing in your hair it's such an enhanced experience.
Horses for courses though. Some people want the most focused version. I personally think cars like this have such performance that can't legally be used to their full potential on the road where most will be driven, you may as well enjoy a bit of open air motoring!
No problem with that - except that the Spyder is (probably) being marketed as focused drivers car - lighter weight, more power, stiffer suspension - not primarily/only a style option.Horses for courses though. So, what do we think? Have the 'perfect spec' cars reached this level - will they go further?Have any sold at this level? PS - I have a deposit on a new one, but still don't think I could bring myself to sell the original. I suppose the only thing more impractical than a Boxster Spyder is two Boxster Spyders (if only!).

I'm not sure I'd class that car as perfect spec? Surely a manual, PCCBs, sports exhaust etc. I've owned both PDK and manual, whilst the PDK might be quicker the manual is as always the more rewarding. Edited by 2010spy on Friday 20th February 18:35
£50k might be about right though because the new Spyder won't be cheap, the base of the old one was under 50k I think, and the 981 around £60k. I can see a good spec 981 costing £70 with some nice options.

Agree. I had not read the spec. I thought 'purist' was: Manual | Buckets | PSE | No AC | No Sat Nav | White ...
and dont forget spyder wheelsEdited by 2010spy on Friday 20th February 19:47

Lovely car but definitely porky spec. Sports seats, a/c, pdk, nav all adds back nearly 60kg. It will be interesting to see if the old ones become spec critical considering there are only around 200 in the UK. They probably won't be imo and the spyder wheels will probably be the only real essential and perhaps the sports exhaust. Some people want the creature comforts. The new one should enhance the following for the old one if anything. Both new and old look great. Will be interesting to see if it has the 3.4 / 3.8. The 3.8 would be monster in such a lightweight package!

If the car is really has a 3.8L and it is lighter than the GT4 (which seems reasonable) then this will be very interesting. ~1300kg with A/C? More interesting than the GT4 in my eyes. Who would have thought...
...except for Walter Röhrl...
I think the perfect Spyder specs would be:...except for Walter Röhrl...
- ~1300kg - keep it light
- manual w/ shorter gearing (at redline: 2nd to 70mph, 3rd to 93mph, sensible spacings thereafter) - making it interactive but crucially not with stupid frustrating gearing
- 3.4 litre with 360bhp that revs to the magic 8k, or even a tad more (giving ~275bhp/tonne) - making it zing so you have to work for your ponies
- GTS buckets - keeping it sporty but comfy, I'd trade my 7.1GT3 buckets for these in a heartbeat
- manual roof/cover - keep it light
- same brakes as GTS - no need for massive 6-pots for a lighter car for the road
- X73-10mm - no need to go firmer, but a bit of extra "stance" would look epic and help differentiate from the GTS
That would be an absolute weapon on the road and probably the best car in the Porsche range. Leave the GT4 to go post laptimes on the 'ring and argue the toss with the GT3, the spec above would be a real road driver's choice.
In reality, that would make it significantly faster than the GT4 on all but long circuits I think and much faster on the road, so what we'll actually see I think is:
- ~1300kg
- manual with the daft GTS length gearing
- 3.4 in CGTS tune with 340bhp
- GTS buckets
- manual roof/cover
- same brakes as GTS
- X73-10mm
Basically, it'll still be a great car, but ultimate greatness will be hobbled by its gearing and the fact that Porsche know they don't need to spend money making a more interesting engine. But, we can live in hope

i look at that as being the best look for a spyder, roof up with back off windows down, but has to have the bits. manual, spyder wheels, buckets, sports exhaust, sports chrono, short shifter, no air con and in white. just my take on things
