Ive got a cayman s 2007, while driving today, only 5 mins into the drive the temp gauge went to zero, and the red bar at the top lit up red, for overheating i take it, then the gauge started working again with in secs, back to normal 80 temp and red overheating light went out, when i stopped a few mins later, the car did have that hot smell about it

anyone seen anything like this?

After the engine cools down check the coolant level.

If the level is low top up with distilled water and get the car to a shop to have the cooling system leak found and fixed. Bear in mind it might be due to a leaking cap.

If the coolant level is ok the problem might be due to an intermittently failing coolant temperature sensor. Or it might be due to a loose connection. (My Boxster had (still has AFAIK) a marginal coolant sensor connector. How I know this I need not cover right now, it is a long and involved story. While the gage or warning lights have never reacted like you described, the actual temperature readings (logged) have upon occasion spiked under some specific conditions: hard turn on rough pavement.) My point is do not dismiss a bad connection/connector.

Hi, I used to get this regularly on my 996.2 Tip. The car was over cooling and because it didn't warm up in the expected manner/time frame the monitoring system uses the temp gauge and light to alert you. It took me ages to suss it out, and in my case a change of thermostat eventually rectified the issue.
