Still really happy with mine, but I have noticed one strange issue. When I went to select an album yesterday, it was not there to select, even though I was sure I had put it on my phone.

When I disconnected the phone, I checked iTunes and the album was definitely on there, but not available again on CarPlay later on. Has anyone else noticed this?

Halfords currently have the Pioneer DA120 for £263, which is the cheapest I can find at the moment.

That is a good price. I wonder if it is coming close to being replaced? I am not sure if they refresh these every year like other kit or keep them going a bit longer.

I have had mine for months now and I find it brilliant. It is not faultless, but it feels like the future when you are coming from a Porsche PCM2!

I suspect there is a new model out soon that supports android auto as well as possibly wireless CarPlay. Pioneer have quite a quick turnover of headunit models.

I'd be interested to see how wireless CarPlay works out. I found it a pain at first connecting my phone (I have it in the glovebox) as I would forget it and leave it in there some of the time. Now it seems normal.

Where I struggle a bit with the idea of wireless CarPlay is battery life. When I am using Nav and music at the same time with the phone connected, the battery only seems to increase about 10% per hour. Surely this mean that on wireless, the battery would be totally decimated on a longer journey?

Ideally, I'd like a solution where I can keep the phone in my pocket connected wirelessly on short journeys, but still have the option to plug in on longer ones. I suppose it is just easier to plug the phone into the charger (I have mine in the armrest) whilst having it connected wirelessly to CarPlay. The standalone charger is much faster than the Pioneer at charging the phone anyway.

Aha!! I recently discovered a sort of solution - next time you get in the car don't connect it up with a lead, but pair your phone using Bluetooth. You will now be able to use the phone in standard Bluetooth phone and Bluetooth audio streaming mode on short journeys - it will connect by Bluetooth automatically when you get in the car - ok nav and Siri won't work through the headunit, but your unlikely to use them anyway on a short run. Just plug in as normal if it's a long run. You can even plug the phone in during a call or listening to streamed music and CarPlay will kick in and (most of the time) your call or music will continue.

The other option is the same as I has before I upgraded from a 5 to an iphone6 plus - get a Brodit clip for your iPhone on the dash which takes the iPhone power connector - then everytime you get in the car you pop it in in one fluid motion without searching about for the lead before you set off.

I believe wireless CarPlay works over Wifi (l could be wrong) so that will batter the battery.

Thanks. I think I will start using the Bluetooth solution for short journeys. I must admit after an initial bout of enthusiasm and downloading all of the apps, I have not used the non-CarPlay side of the unit at all. Some of the apps look good. I am quite interested in how NavMii works, for example, as I have used it quite successfully on my phone when abroad and don't want to incur data charges.

Do you mean the appradio apps which require the HDMI cable and the lightning to HDMI adaptor? I've never bothered with those myself.

There is nothing stopping you using a non-carplay compatible app if you mount the iphone where you can get to it for control when driving, Then the audio should be directed through the headunit - I have tried this with Soundcloud.

Finally got it fitted on my 56/2007 997.1. Dynamic Sounds in Wandsworth, took under 2 hours. Really helpful people, really neat job, good price.

The only new piece of kit visible apart the unit itself is the microphone, discretely placed at the top of the windscreen just to the driver-side of centre. You can see it but it's very neat and smart.

Absolutely love it and would recommend it to everyone with the OEM PCM. Voice-controlled dialling, texting, navigation and music control all great. Can't get it to understand any request for Björk yet so will keep working on that, but even navigating music manually is far easier and safer using this touchscreen than the OEM PCM.

A concern over the steering wheel controls adaptor compatibility was mentioned but it certainly seems to work as expected - volume and forward/back controls all good; haven't used the call answer button yet but the hangup button works.

Some have also mentioned using Bluetooth audio for short journeys. It certainly works, and you can even plug in after starting on Bluetooth and CarPlay just picks up, but to be honest for any journey I like it being out of reach in the glovebox knowing it's charging and you can call, message, etc, all handsfree. Also if you're mid-call when you stop your journey, the call doesn't drop - just unplug and carry on talking as you're walking.

Two gripes so far (warning - #firstworldproblems!):
- You have to reach for the screen and hold the virtual "Home" button to trigger Siri, which is a shame although I guess unavoidable as there's no button on the steering wheel for it. I feel they could have used the button that instead seems to switch between audio sources as I think Siri is pretty important for CarPlay to be really safe.
- Apple Maps just isn't as good as Google Maps, or maybe it's just different. I'm getting used to it though...

Thanks for providing feedback, really useful to read. Could you answer a couple of questions?

- Where did you install the cable to connect your phone, in the glovebox or the storage underneath the air con controls?
- Did you just provide Dynamic sounds with the Pioneer unit and they got everything else, or did you buy all the other parts yourself?
- Do you mind telling how much it set you back?
- Do you have any photos!

Glad to hear you are enjoying the unit, I still absolutely love mine.

In terms of the problems, I can't really comment on the first one as I haven't got the steering wheel controls anyway. I guess it must be annoying when most of the key commands are on the wheel and that one isn't.

I think I must have just got used to Apple Maps as I find it fine now. That said it was a bit strange at first, AND I was coming from using the PCM for satnav although I always used Google Maps when not in the car.

I'd be interested to know how you find it longer term. My only regret is spending £40 on the Apple HDMI cable that would enable me to use the 'AppRadio' side of the unit occasionally as well as CarPlay.

I have never used it, and the only time I can see it being used is if I take the car abroad and want to use 'NavMii' as it has the maps stored on the phone.

Glad to have been of some help.
- It's in the glovebox. My iPhone sticks out of the slot under the air con controls and, despite the rubbery surfaces, sometimes makes a rattly noise that bugs me. Also with the CarPlay set up being partly about safety it's actually liberating and handy knowing it just isn't within reach.
- DS supplied and fitted absolutely everything.
- Happy to share smile I did loads of research on the price, and bear in mind this includes the rather expensive adaptors for the Bose sound system and the steering wheel controls. It came to £678.
- I tried to take photos but discovered that CarPlay stops when you start the iPhone camera, and of course CarPlay is a lot of what I wanted to take photos of! I'm charging up an actual old camera now and will post pics soon...

Pleased to say I'm already getting used to the Apple Maps. (Still use Google on my phone tho - Apple doesn't do public transport.) I still find some of the buttons to be too small for me to hit spot-on every time but I use Siri as much as possible, so just wish it were a bit easier to trigger it.

Was the other place who wanted £1,200 in Byfleet or Park Royal? I have the same issue and googled dynamic but the Google review was a bit shocking

(Sorry about slow reply)

Byfleet.

I can't explain the DS reviews - I've been there twice now and they have always been extremely professional and friendly.

Hi folks,

Just had the pioneer head unit fitted to my wife's Boxster to replace a dead PCM, and over all pretty impressed. I have a couple of issues though. When playing music some tracks seem to cut out intermittently, as if the signal is lost for a second. The phone is connected by fire wire cable though so not sure why this would be. Any ideas? Also, there is no sound coming from the speakers behind the seats. Could the installer have missed a connection for these? The car has the Bose sound system, so I thought all speakers were connected to the amp, is this correct?

Any help would be appreciated,
Cheers

Hi all,

I’ve got a Pioneer SPH-DA120 stereo and I bought the Connects2 fitting kit. I’ve got it to work, so that’s fine, but I’m struggling to mount it.

The cage that comes with the Connects2 fascia kit is supposed to bolt to the stereo. But the bolt holes in the stereo are too small. If I use smaller screws then the heads are too small for the holes in the cage. So, I tried to use the Pioneer cage, but that doesn’t seem to work with the Connects2 plastic fascia, it just won’t clip on.

What have other people done here? Which cage are you using?

Thanks,

Dan

It has been some time since I installed and eventually removed the pioneer using a connects2 kit in my E92 BMW and I vaguely remember having similar issues
with screw sizes. Keep trying as there are many screw holes in the cage and the pioneer unit. I think I may have used some other screws I had lying about. Try contacting connects2 via their website of you are really strugglingz

Brexit pricing must have kicked in. Cartronics in Byfleet just quoted £1440 for this installed unit with reverse camera in a 987 Boxster (non-Bose and no steering wheel controls). Have asked them to price without the camera...

See if you can get an independent to have a look.

Hopefully the camera might make a fair bit of difference. The unit itself only costs £320, the fascia about £20, aerial adaptor about £10 and I don't think you even need many extras for a non-Bose car.

A competent person shouldn't really take any more than an hour to do this, but even assuming they are charging for more time I still can't see how the fitted price can be any more than £600-£700.

I am an incompetent person with this type of thing and I still think I could reinstall mine in an hour or so.
