The unit isn't more expensive than when I bought it - I paid RRP £329 - 15% Halfords BMW owner's club discount in 2015 IIRC.

Ive just been to Halfords to see about buying one of these and they say they cant help as my 2007 987.1 has an optical cable that they cant get to work. I;m fairly sure from reading on here that my PCM 2.1 doesn't - It's certainly not got Bose.

I don't know about Porsche OEM stereos, but the 2003 Volvo XC90 we have just bought has optical connections and still it is possible to fit this stereo, but I will need to buy over £200 of adaptors and cables!

Indeed, you can still fit it, I had it fitted with Bose, but as above, there is a convertor the connect up to the Bose optical connections, and that itself was around £170 IIRC.

Just fitted one in my 2006 Boxster turns out I had an Ask amp behind the toolkit so the bottom base speakers in the doors didn't work. Short version is connect the two wires (black/red and white) together as shown and hey presto it works. If I had rear speakers I guess they would work too. It was really easy to fit although just waiting for the bezel to be delivered. All just plugged in with a Farka aerial connector from Halfords and joined the blue/white remote wires together for the aerial adaptor.

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but for those interested it looks as though there have finally been some updates for this unit.

I went into the Spotify app on the weekend (by mistake!) and found that it now works perfectly. The only problem that I have with it now is that it doesn't distinguish between music that is downloaded to the phone and the files that aren't downloaded. This means I could be playing music through my cellular connection without realising.

This is easily sorted by downloading all of my playlists as I have plenty of room on my phone.

There seems to be an Amazon Music icon now as well. I'll try this out as well, although I have only got Prime Music not the full £7.99/month subscription.

What was the unit you are running? Is this the apps on the head unit itself (not via CarPlay)?

I've just installed a AVH-X8850BT and swapped the ASK amp for a GMA3702 (both Pioneer).

I have got the Pioneer SPH-DA120 and all of the apps are within CarPlay. I never use the AppRadio OS.

The optical connector is because all cars are pre-wired for the CD changer in the boot (which doesn't exist with a base sound system), and the connecter also sends the radio station to the little digital bit in the dash.

I wouldn't recommend Halfords, I had mine done there and the fit on the fascia was bad, and they also forgot to include all the cables with the unit, and cut the reverse camera cable right down to 2 inches, even though they weren't using it for anything! (I've since fitted my own reverse camera and it's very easy on a 987.1 Cayman)

I used Dynamic in Wandsworth for getting some speakers fitted (having the new head unit showed that one woofer was blown) and they were great, even got the fascia fitting properly. Great prices too, their hourly rate is a bit of a bargain compared to others I've seen.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but my final problem with Carplay has been solved by upgrading my iPhone, so thought I'd share in case anyone else is having the same problem.

Around the time that the law was strengthened on using/holding phones in the car, my Carplay unit decided that it needed me to 'unlock your iPhone to use Carplay', every single time I switched the engine on. Inevitably, I'd forget to do this sometimes, so after pulling out of a petrol station, I'd be driving and would either have to lean across to the glovebox to unlock the phone or pull over.

This happened with my iPhone 6 and 7+. I recently bought an iPhone X and plugged it in for the first time yesterday. I got the same message, but when I reached into the glovebox to unlock the phone, there was a mesaage asking me if I want to allow the Carplay unit to use the phone without it being unlocked. I clicked allow and now Carplay works straight away.

It is highly possible that I have just been an idiot and this has always been an option, but I am sure it didn't pop up on my last two phones, and there certainly didn't seem to be an option to change it after it was first plugged in.
