just spotted a silver box looking thing in the front boot - I assume thats an amp?? if so - its now £655 to instal .... getting pricey!
Also - am I right that theres a handbrake bypass needed to access keyboard on the move? is that something I should be requesting when I drop it to the car audio place?
I guess it depends how straight down the line they are. It is easy to bypass the handbrake connector, but not sure if pro fitters are officially allowed to do it.Also - am I right that theres a handbrake bypass needed to access keyboard on the move? is that something I should be requesting when I drop it to the car audio place?

is it worth asking them? I assume its handy to type on the go?
Definitely ask them if they will do it. I wouldn't suggest actually typing on the go, but I find it useful because I don't always use the handbrake (leave it in gear when parked up) so it would be a minor pain to have to put it on just to type a postcode into the nav!You will definitely need it either bypassed or wired to the handbrake, though. I find the Apple nav very good in general, but the destination input by voice is pathetic at the moment. It only seems to search in the local area e.g. If you ask it to go to 'London', it will find 'London Road' in your local town or local businesses with London in their name, but not London itself. Postcode by voice doesn't work at all in my experience. The keyboard is an important part of the package at the moment, but might not be after a few more updates.

all set up and working great!!
just one thought - off to belguium tomorrow....I suppose using my satnav will hammer through the data useage??
I think so. I have actually downloaded NavMii for when I go abroad. It is a free app which is supposedly compatible with the Appradio side of the Pioneer rather than CarPlay. Maps stored in phone memory rather than downloaded.just one thought - off to belguium tomorrow....I suppose using my satnav will hammer through the data useage??
I only used it once so far in a hire car and the UI looked better than the Apple one. Not tried on CarPlay yet, as the Apple one is fine in the UK, but may be worth a shot?
Interesting thought - I know Google Maps can cache your route which is great as long as you don't go too far from your planned router - the idea is you set the route on Wifi.
Not sure what Apple maps does - it will also be using your data for traffic updates.
How much did you pay in the end to get it fitted?
ETA. Don't you need the Apple lightning/HDMI adaptor to get the Appradio side working with the iphone?

I'm considering one of these for my 987.1 with sound pack plus as the standard h/u is beyond rubbish. The carplay looks a lot better than some of the double DIN aftermarket options, which are a bit disco and lairy for my tastes.
Question though - can you get other apps to work with it - ie if I have the TomTom Iphone App can I use that instead of the Apple offering?

You'll need one of these to run in Appradio mode - Apple Digital AV connector to Lightning and HDMI and a HDMI cable.
This is a useful website for info http://www.appradioworld.com/
Non-carplay enabled apps will send their audio through the caplay head unit, but you would need to control them through your iphone - this is one of the reasons I have my iphone 5 mounted next to the steering wheel on a brodit mount - for carplay enabled apps, you even get a dual screen display - for example on Apple Maps you get the map on the head unit and turn by turn instructions shown on the iphone.

TomTom does not work with it, but there are several Nav apps that do. Question though - can you get other apps to work with it - ie if I have the TomTom Iphone App can I use that instead of the Apple offering?
The unit essentially has two totally different operating systems. Apple CarPlay only works with Apple Music, Maps, Phone etc and a very few third party ones like Spotify.
The other side is AppRadio, which is Pioneer's own attempt at a UI. There are more apps available for this, but a lot of them require your phone to be connected by the £39 Apple HDMI connector as well as the lightning cable.
I have not tried the AppRadio side yet, but it was one of the things that made me go for the Pioneer over the Alpine. May as well have the extra functionality rather than not.

£600 in the end - not great, but a VERY neat job - looks factory fitted (and I'd have ballsed it up)
Not too bad really. I need to take mine out again to get it 100% flush, so I probably would have been better coughing up the extra cash to get someone to fit it for me. I actually quite enjoyed doing it I suppose!Tiggsy said:
has anyone sorted out appradio apps with this unit???
I've downloaded the navmii app but when i plugged in the iphone it just defaults to carpaly so i cant use the appradio feature and play the navmii app????????
As Emeye says, you will need the Apple Digital AV connector and and HDMI cable if you want to use the AppRadio functions. I think this is because it is using an equivalent of Apple's 'mirroring' to get the image on the screen rather than the CarPlay mode which is more direct.I've downloaded the navmii app but when i plugged in the iphone it just defaults to carpaly so i cant use the appradio feature and play the navmii app????????

Since I updated to iOS 9 my Siri voice has stopped working - anyone else experiencing this with their Carplay unit?
What is it doing? Is it asking you the questions e.g. 'Where would you like to go?' and then not taking your voice command, or is it not coming up with the question at all?I didn't test it yet as I rarely use voice commands, but it was certainly asking for input by voice as usual yesterday.
