Just had notification that our new Cayman will be delivered in Sept/Oct and this has forced us to start thinking seriously about what to do to help finance it.

We currently have a:

2009 JCW MINI, Manual with 26K on the clock, pretty good spec, used as a daily commuter, in tip top condition and I reckon is worth around 11K.
2008 Boxtster 2.7, Manual with 26K on the clock, pretty good spec, used at weekends, holiday road trips etc. in tip top condition and I reckon is worth around 16K
2014 Macan Petrol S with 9K on the clock, pretty good spec, was used as a commuter but I changed jobs a couple of moths ago so isn't used much now and I reckon is worth around 54K.

At least one of them has to go as we can't justify 4 cars sat on the drive especially as only 1 gets used everyday.

My first preference is to keep the Macan as it's the most practical, is a hoot to drive, seems to currently have bulletproof depreciation, is a real stealth wagon and most importantly is the wife's first choice as well even though she's never driven it. So that leaves the Boxster and the MINI.

I love driving the Boxster, I've had it more than 5 years and I think depreciation has pretty much bottomed out but I think it's going to be a very similar car to drive to the Cayman and that makes me think I'll drive it less than I do now. The wife is not so keen, she'll drive it on a hot sunny day but finds it heavy and quite mechanical therefore more difficult to drive. Bizarrely the electrically assisted steering on the new Cayman swung the decision to get that (partly I guess because the already MINI has it).

The MINI is my wife's daily and she really likes driving it. She tried the new MINI JCW but preferred the Cayman so that's what was ordered and the idea was the current car was sold but now we're having second thoughts. It's a great car to drive but I get uncomfortable in it very quickly so it's unlikely I'll drive it much in the future if we kept it. I also think it'll continue to depreciate over the next few years.

So options are:

Sell the MINI
Sell the Boxster
Sell both

We are both quite open to selling either and can see pros and cons for both but are genuinely finding it difficult to decide what to do so would welcome some different perspectives from the gurus on here.

Cheers

Surely get rid of the Boxster for the Cayman coming?

MINI for daily work, Macan for family stuff, Cayman in place of the Boxster.

Btw this is definitely one for the first world problems thread wink

I would sell both.

Mini. Purely a personal thing because I can't stand them. (I am speaking from personal experience of having had a Cooper 'S' which I H.A.T.E.D and I paid £££'s to get out of the lease early).

Boxster. I think the Cayman will be a very similar drive and the 987 might seem a bit dated in comparison to the 981.

So unless you particularly want to keep top-down motoring then I think you will have everything covered with the Macan and Cayman, both practicality and fun.

Sell Mini. Boxster for weekends and summer and for those top down drives. Something different to the party.

- Change the Cayman order to a Boxster order, save £1,500
- sell the 987 Boxster and Mini

For weekends and (euro) road trips, top down motoring is a must for me. And owning 2 mid engined Porsches that aren't vastly different is a bit pointless IMO.

I would sell the Mini privately , it should be easy to sell assuming it is priced right.

Not the best time of year to p/x the Boxster , if you must p/x whilst the going is good & values are still strong p/x the Macan.

Good Luck!

I guess a lot depends on how much of the weekend appeal of the Boxster is due to it being a convertible rather than just a sporty two seater.

I drove a 2015 Cayman for the first time yesterday whilst my 2005 987 Boxster S was in for service.

Of course there are similarities, but I found them quite a different experience overall. The new car has a better ride quality on 20" wheels than mine does on 18".

The interior is miles better even taking into account that my 987 has extended leather and the Cayman I drove was plastic. Like for like, there would have been no contest.

The Cayman just felt much more modern to drive. Little overall speed difference between my 3.2 and the new 2.7 as expected, but the Cayman with PDK has that 'point and squirt' ability that is really fun. It is really easy to drive fast. I don't think I'd use it like that most of the time, but nice to have.

I won't be changing any time soon because I like mine and the new one is 3 times the price, but if you already have the Cayman coming anyway, you don't use the convertible-element that much and your wife prefers a more modern feeling car it may be the case that the Boxster stays in the garage?

It's a fair question and easily answered. The Cayman is the wife's new daily and her choice. Of course I'm happy that she chose that over another MINI which was also on her list but it subsequently raised the question of which car to sell.

Decision is made (I think).

The MINI's going and will be in the classifieds soon.
