Car magazine (Aug 2015 issue) has an insider report regarding the gen 2 models. It has all the usual discussion regarding the switch to turbo 4 cylinder engines and minor body mods. They also speculate that Cayman pricing will under cut the Boxster! There could also be a name change to '718' to bring the range in line with the '911' and '918'.

If the speculation is correct and the Gen 2 Cayman undercuts the Boxster how will that affect residual values of gen 1 six cylinder Caymans vs Boxsters?

Boxster pricing has been converging with the Cayman for a couple of years now, only a couple of hundred quid in it right now. I suspect we will see a price rise on both; just a bit less on the Cayman.

A price drop for the Cayman would make sense, the Boxster/Cayman is the only car I can think of where the coupe is more expensive than the cabriolet.

I personally expect the 981.2 to be slightly cheaper than the 981.1 because Porsche is trying to sell more cars and they'll have a hard time marketing the 4-cylinder over a 6-cylinder without a minor price reduction.

Did the article contribute any new info? All I've heard so far is minor styling tweaks, 4cyl turbo and upgraded ICE.

It speculates 2.0l 250bhp engine for the base models, 2.5l 300bhp for S spec and 370bhp for the GTS. With future GT4 models sticking with 6 cylinders. Minor tweaks to the lights and bumpers and a general weight reduction.

No mention of any changes to the infotainment system but the car needs it, for me it's the one area of the car that really disappoints. My 2010 BMW 3 Series has a better system than my 981 Cayman S has.

I'd be a bit surprised if the base model has less power than the current one. They know they are going to get stick for going turbo 4 and their only counter can be it has more power, more torque, better economy. Except they can't say that if it has less power.

I know the extra torque may well make it's real-world performance greater that the current one 90% of the time, it would still be losing bar bragging rights to the outgoing 6.

The 70bhp difference between the S seems rather large too.

But we shall see.

That is a slightly odd power spread. Maybe the new base model will be a bit cheaper, say 36-38K.

Careful Jez you're heading down a path to zealot beardos who believe Porsche died as a company in 1998 when they abandoned air cooled lol

I don't think talk of 981.2 should be allowed on Porsche forumsfurious It can not be called a real Porsche without a flat 6, Trading Standards need to look at this under the trade descriptions acteek

I'm looking forward to my Porsche Boxster 981 2.7 NA Flat 6 doubling in price biggrin

See my thread on the £20k options. Looks like some people are already trying to cash in on this. hehe

I think it will be around the same price as the out going versions, but will have fitted as standard Mobile phone prep and dab radio about £770 of kit at todays prices.

I see! I am quite open minded about this whole 4 cylinder turbo thing....will wait and see what I think after I've had a loaner for a day. My 2.7 981 will have around 90,000 miles within 2 years time, so I will be having to make a move around that time!!

Perhaps I should replace it with a 986 2.5 ??!! ;-)

Good to see someone else is! Having had 2 Subaru turbos I'm sure that it need not be ALL bad (and the best bits could really be quite good). Indeed combine the top end rush and characterful noise of the early 2.0s and the bottom end of the 2.5 and you could have a genuinely charismatic engine.

I await apoplexy from moose and ord.

If the rumoured numbers are true then the Cayman S could very well end up with 380 PS and the same or more torque than the outgoing 3.8L. Could be a really exciting engine, even though it will assault your ears and have rubberband like throttle response and eats little kittens, etc.

Well that is a USP, and if Breaking boundaries is, as has been said, a defining characteristic of a "Classic", it might well qualify.

Apparently Porsche's previous 4-pot turbo in the 944 was quite well regarded.

Looking at the prices and some of the links you and some others have posted recently, I've been tempted to pick one up ......they are just so cheap...it's hard to resist!! But I am not a fan of running two cars...tried it once and whatever car I was in, I wanted to be in the other!

Ha...exactly...nobody knows....so I shall just relax and see what they build without any preconceived opinions.

To be delusional is a belief held with strong conviction despite superior evidence to the contrary. Many thanks for your superior evidence!

I love my 2.7 with it's revvy engine and hate generic 'turbo diesel' like power delivery.....but Porsche do seem to know what they are doing when it comes to building cars that I like....so I will remain open minded...and if that makes me worthy, mature and delusional, I will take your kind comments as a compliment!! Cheers :-)
