The gears are obviously too long, Ozzie! Are you seriously saying that you wouldn't prefer shorter gears?

We all probably attach different amounts of significance to the issue - for example, it might just about stop me buying a manual 991, but we shall see; whereas others aren't very bothered by it. But we would all prefer more sensible ratios so that we could rev a bit higher in 3rd and 4th, right? The 2.7 could also do with shorter gears (probably just the final drive) to put the engine in the power band more of the time, because it is down on torque and so a bit lethargic at some speeds.

But that's an S not a 2.7. I went for a (PDK) S over a 2.7 precisely because the 2.7 lacked the torque to comfortably pull those gears - even with the lower PDK ratios. And personally I'd still prefer the gearing to be a bit shorter.

"For goodness sake this is about bar bragging rights" :-)

you cannot make this thread up really.

You agree with me really, you bought a car worth £20k more than my car , they you say you OWN the S not the torque lacking 2.7 but you think it's me doing the bragging rights lol.
Even the new 981 2.7 PDK new cost more than my cars I bought ! how can I be bragging !

as for using 0-100 in 8, yes very easy to do in turbo cars, I also rev out my R in 3rd easy 10/15 times a day.

My cars are not even that fast, 11 seconds to a ton is hot hatch performance today ! I could sell both my cars buy a mp12 which does 0-124mph in 8.5 seconds !

And I bought a FORD Fiesta !!! most people who see me laugh at it ! but it's still the Mini hot hatch class winner and drives great with a really nice chassis.
No Snob value so it gets poo pooed though !

bragging rights lol go to the 991 GT3 thread to see that ! Still a bargin at £150k so they say !

I bought the S because it pulls those gears much more easily - and therefore is a much more relaxed car to drive, not because it's faster.
If you do over the ton 10-15 times a day these days anywhere near where I live in a car you wouldn't have your license very long.

But this is a 2.7 thread so we shouldn't highjack it.

I tend not to buy a car to relax in, I do that on my sofa's and if watching F1 can fall straight to sleep :-)

The thing is you choose the 3.4 due to the reason and am posting about, just I have a more vocal view on it :-p

If I wanted a relaxed drive I would buy an Audi they are far nicer cars for transport esp if you want to stay under 60mph, just does not have that Badge when you drop the kids off ;-p

yes chaps, you buy the S to go slightly faster to 100 and then not brag about it, it's a meaningless number. and you could well get even faster from any number of boring turbo cars. but let's have a conversation about fiestas instead.

I said it was a nice car for transport not aimed at me. I only buy great cars at the top of there game. Exige, CSL, Noble, TTRS, GT3, M3 competition, Cayman R , Spyder, GT4, these are my past few cars, they all have something about them which invokes driver appeal if you LOVE cars, the 2.7 PDK 981 has nothing about it to drive vs any of the cars I have owned the last 10 years, and to add to that to buy a new one cost more than I paid for any of the above by some margin. (bar the GT4 of course)

You list the GT4...when dd you take delivery of that....clearly you know how well it drives? On your list you mention the GT3 and the BMW M3 which you class as 'great cars on top of their game'.....but I thought you disliked these...I seem to remember reading you kept the M3 for a very short space of time?

Many of your 8000+ posts on PH seem to be mindless drivel which are purely designed to troll threads. I really don't know what pleasure you gain from being such a little pest.

A lot of huffing and puffing going on here and all because the OP said he thought the 2.7 PDK Cayman was a pretty decent car. You do realise that a lot of people reading this thread (and others of a similar ilk) see the "knowledgeable experts" on here as the modern equivalent of train spotters.

Lets be absolutely clear, I drove Cayman because of all the positive publicity (hype if you like) and thought that a 2.7 pdk was the best ALL ROUND sportscar I had driven (and I've driven a lot). Not the fastest, the best handling, or even the most fun - but a damn good car. I only chose the S because I think it is more "rounded", better when you just want to breeze along - accepting that the 2.7 is a sweeter engine when revved. If someone prefers, or is just as happy with the 2.7, I think it a perfectly reasonable view to take.

If you can afford to have a garage full of cars which can better meet your use, mood, and the roads you are going to meet - then there may well be better choices, but if you are a pauper like me limited to just 2 or 3 cars then the 981 makes a good case of itself as one of them.

Indeed, a pity some weirdo can mess up what can be an excellent car forum. Oh well....best not to let him get to us.

Sooooooo....back on topic, here is my 981 Cayman manual....I bloody love the thing....would love to see your 2.7 too...if you tend to buy brand new as I do, I personally think these are a bargain as long as you don't get carried away with the options!!!

Totally agree. Base cars at £40k are astounding value. The S for £50k had me smitten. smile

Yep. His need to simply be right all the time is what is the overriding issue for him - reminds me of me when I was a kid.

You guys can enjoy your gutless means of transport still, while he attempts to right the car enthusiast world =)

I actually feel sorry for the guy really as he clearly can't take a step back and adopt a bit more of a live and let live attitude, which let's face is much needed in a world where us petrolheads are a bit of a dying breed!

Some of the most fun I've had on a public road was in a MK1 MX5 which was worth £1k, and I certainly wasn't thinking about how long it took to get to 100 (I never made it to 100!).

This is my 2.7. Picked it up at the end of June and so far it's exceeded all my expectations.
I came from a 987.1 Cayman S. The PDK suits my driving for a greater percentage of the time. It just does everything so well.

I am stating I buy the best cars in the model range if I can, So never have to wonder "what if" when the model above comes by, some I don't get on with and sell them quite fast, does not stop them from being the best car in the model range does it ? M3 has always been seen as one of the class leaders thought I would try it after my disapointing GT3 so went for the M3 competition, again did not suite what I wanted from a car, again vocal about it and sold it !

not hard to grasp is it ?, only thing I see is insults from a lot of you guys, who imo are not really into cars(have not owned that many cars and keep them full oem and imo just want nice transport, again never see any of the shouters on track either, So I guess you are all doing 60 mph in sports cars, because if ones posts you do 85mph you also get called a cock !

the best ones are from the guys who REFUSE to change a geo and state "Porsche knows best" says it all from a lot of posters most I have nothing in common with.

on the other hand I also have a lot of backers and a lot of private emails from many people on here, so you have to take the abuse as well as make friends who do share/want the best from their cars and really do enjoy driving.

that's forums, I have a opinion, it's just that , get over it and stop the abuse troll calling etc.

The 2.7 is a gorgeous engine. The car isn't fast by any modern sports/performance car standards. But that really isn't the point.

It is still too fast to be driven properly hard in public roads, so a taste for a faster car is just that. No reasons why the slower car cannot be as much fun!

So - you buy the 'best' car based on it being the top of the model range, for fear of seeing a car that might be perceived as superior. This seems like a basic insecurity issue.

Plainly you are not the great judge of cars you purport to be - buying the 'best' model has lead to you buying cars you don't like. Did you not have a proper test drive? Maybe the badge was all you wanted. I had always wanted an M3, until I test drove two of them (manual and DCT) and realised they were not for me. I didn't think to myself that I could start modifying them to suit me and plough ahead with the purchase.

You are of course entitled to your opinion, but the way you express it is at best boorish.

Several posters on this thread own the car in question, myself included, we don't really like statements that suggest we are misguided badge snobs, merely because the drag strip figures are slower than some other cars. I don't drive on a drag strip, I like going round corners quickly and a Cayman is very good at doing this.

Your patronising comments about posters not being proper car lovers are typical and I am a little annoyed with myself for replying, as that is what you want, it is the very definition of being a troll.

I am now resolved to ignore any post you make on any subject, no matter how contrary it is to what I believe or know.
