Manual is my preference too for driving pleasure, but I don't actually find Sport auto to be overly aggressive (not on my 997 anyway, maybe the Caymen settings are different). I never use Sport + auto mode for road driving though and to be fair the user manual describes it as a setting specifically for track use - although I'm not sure why you would do a track day in auto!
So you can focus on braking, steering and timing of throttle inputs, I think. Not for me, but a lot of people sing its praises for track driving.

I pushed the Sport+ button in my 2.7 PDK loan car. It was hilarious - setting minimum rpm at about 5,000! Useful? No.
Yeah it just uses the lowest gear possible at pretty much all times to maximise performance. That's the idea for track use. Pointless for general road driving.

My 981 C 2.7 manual is my daily...most of the time I drive it sensibly, doing the daily commute along with client visits etc....but then the odd drive home or blast during the day on an empty B road reveals all its unique qualities...the noise...the high revving engine..sublime handling.....I've covered nearly 50K in mine....I can assure you, I would not swap this for any BMW M/Audi RS....there's something about this car.. has hidden depths you can't discover on a 1 hour test drive thrash.

I concur that the high gearing is a result of meeting emission targets....but like any car I've ever owned, you learn to know what gears you need to be in....that's part of getting to know any car I buy. Luckily, I can adapt to a car quicker than most as I use mine everyday rather than the occasional weekend.

I bought mine for £45K brand new....there is no car in this price range - let alone £15K more, that I would rather have.

Just reading this old thread for the first time...

Coming from a high torque TTS to the 2.7 PDK 981 has been great. No more arriving at a corner before I know how to go around it, no more ludicrous turbo peakiness, no more secret 4WD goings on. Loving the noise, and better in manual mode than the manual loan car I had when cruise was fitted to mine.

Some people get off on acceleration. 0-60 in 5.5 seconds is fine for me. As a former dragster driver, 0-100mph in 10 seconds would be dull anyhow. For me the looks, poise, comfort, noise, fuel economy, ease of daily driving all make a superb package.

On the day I agreed to buy mine, I test drove a better specced "S" UK launch car for the same money. The 2.7 had more appeal due to it's need to be revved and it's slower progress, and not just because the S was brown!

It takes all sorts. I would hate an Aventador or Veyron. How could you use one as a DD?
