I've lost farting in 2nd gear on my GTS.
Discussion
Hi,
Hoping someone can help or suggest what could be the issue before I make a visit to my OPC.
So my 981 CGTS on Friday appears to have lost the majority of the PSE whilst in 2nd gear.
To describe this more, in all gears if I overrun above 4-5 rpm you will get the loud crackles pops and farts as the rev's come back down. However on Friday this no longer happens in 2nd gear. But strangely it still happens as normal in 1st and 3rd still. Not been brave enough to try 4th on a public road yet. There is no obvious loss in performance to the car, it feels just as quick. Oils, water, pressure all reading ok.
So leading up to this. The car has currently completed 7k miles. Prior to use on Friday had been sat in the garage for the last 5 days un-used or un-started. As always, normal warm up followed etc.. before I discovered 2nd gear is not working.
At first I thought I was just the outside conditions, as it was a cooler evening. However given the weather was so nice on Saturday I took her out all afternoon. Problem still there. Even after several stop and starts etc.. It is very noticeable that other gears are louder than gear 2.
Anyone even heard of this on a 981? or can think what it could be? Wondering if the electronics have gremlins in them and prevent the exhaust from fully opening?
Worried if I take it to the OPC, A they will just say its normal. But having driven 7k miles with the PSE on, I can be assured something has gone wrong.

On the 996 there is an exhaust control valve whereby between certain speeds the PSE is effectively turned off (speeds normally associated with town driving). Perhaps the later cars have the same issue and a simple diode snip could be the answer to your problem as per the earlier car.

Thank you. Good idea worth a try.... I assume you mean unplug and see if it restores the setting (either when still unplugged or having replugged back in?) Haven't got the manual infront of me, does anyone know where this is on the 981? (Just read the 997 thread on PH after a google)
First of all the titke of this topic, still laughing.
Never noticed this lack of farting in second gear. But maybe just because I don't associate the farting with the gear but with engine rev and throttle position.
Will try to investigate over the week end....my feeling is that is gonna crackle and pop and fart and pof popopof pof the same on every gear. lol

Personally I'd be glad. Twas one of the reasons I sold my 981S....the artificial overrun noises. A bit meh after a while.
I see what you mean. I personally like it but equally would also like and *off* off switch whereby it's off completely (instead of still kicking in at 4K rpm or whatever) so I can just hear the engine noise when I fancy itTrev450 said:
I dont' know if the PSE is different on a 987 to that of a 981, but mine when switched off is just that, completely off.
It is different, even compared to 981 S.GTS has a "optimised" - from press wording - exhaust.
Carried back to new -GTS model year- 981 S as far as I am aware.

And to be fair, it is true that also with valve closed / switched off, sometime it seems too loud, like with valve open.
All in all, it is a loud engine and exhaust, louder with valve open.
Mine still isn't working going to take it to the opc All in all, it is a loud engine and exhaust, louder with valve open.

So looked in the manual and can only find the fuse for the pse (which also turns off other stuff) so can't pull that out.
Does anyone know where the pse cable is I. The engine bay? Or car? That I can just pull out on the 981 and try that.
Reading more online some folks on renlist have had gasket leakages which cause it to lose the snap crackle and pop
Help please! picture would be amazing

There may be something in here but I haven't had the opportunity to read the whole thread yet:

Have you changed the fuel you use in it? I noticed less of the pops and bangs when I put a tank of 97 in rather than Shell Optimax. could be worth a try
Apart from the delivery tank (which I have no idea what was inside) its always been run on Shell V-power. So no change there.Booked in for the 18th of Sept. Just hoping to find the cable before then. As I know the OPC will just say its working as normal.
I think though I have a gasket leak on the exhuast causing the pressure not to build up enough all of the time to "fart"
