I presume there is/was a bigger market/more demand for the GT4.

Where did you get that from, the report I have from the DVLA states 539 (plus 29 SORN) to end of September 2016.

Probably by adding up all the new registrations.

Yep, new registrations via DVLA's website and data file "veh0160.ods".

Spyders are very niche, I'm surprised the number is that high actually.

987 Spyder = 237 admittedly split between manual & pdk but this time manual only much more sensible roof arrangement and 3.8L engine was enough to convince 229 lucky owners to go for it but I think the low 200's is about as good as it will ever get for this format at leastcool

No idea which is right then, as VEH0120 and VEH0121 are all registered cars and SORN cars in GB/UK. Good old DVLA!

160 - registered
120 - currently taxed
121 - SORN'd

There will be some written off, not taxed or SORN'd and some exported. I would say the initial registrations count is the most accurate as to how many were delivered to the UK.

new reg would also count cars being brought in from Europe and other places and UK registered though. not just C16 UK cars.

Fair point, can't be a huge number of those though these days.
