How about a Spyder? this one fore example?

Not such a track monster but just perfect for a euro tour
Sat in this car tonight whilst at the dealers. Very nice but the wrong seats for a euro tour. Sales guy told me a few people has looked at, but not settled on this example due to the seats.
Amazed the buckets are putting people off!

So was I. But on reflection, not all buyers are Pistonheads readers and are probably more influenced by their own requirements rather than what some on here would try convincing is best for them.

Horses for courses. the 918's are excellent seats but for a trip to euro I'd probably prefer sports seats.

I'd agree from driving cars with both thought that with the buckets, corners is a more special experience which is what these cars are made for.

some of us care because of unsprung weight benefit and having the same brakes as 918.
with PCCB, it is also the most over-braked car I know of (currently) for the weight and HP.
FWIW and I genuinely don't have a beef in the ceramics or not issue

comments by petevb on unsprung weight benefits (or not) are quite interesting.

Well mine was one of if not the first GT4 ... so we'll see how it goes.

As for PCCB's ... 911R, does unsprung mass count for nothing ???
It does, of course - but far less than is supposed by some, partly because the extra weight of the calipers offsets the weight of the discs, and because the weight of the wheels and tyres has a MUCH bigger impact on the rotational inertia impact of the whole assembly (and hence steering feel) than PCCBs do. If you trawl through this topic you will find someone who actually has weighed the bits and has done the sums (I could do the sums but haven't got the bits - but am not surprised by the conclusions).

pvb is a very talented engineer/individual, but never underestimate the benefits of reducing unsprung weight.
The benefits may not be so obvious when comparing a 330mm steel disc with a four pot caliper to a 350mm PCCB and six pot caliper, but try comparing a 350mm OE one piece steel disc to a 350mm PCCB disc and the difference/benefit becomes far more obvious and clear cut.

I ran a 1M Coupe as a toy a couple of years ago. Despite some saying the standard single pot sliding calipers and BMW's budget "floating" disc arrangement were "ok", they weren't, and a few stops from high speed had them grumbling followed by uneven pad transfer and the inevitable shaking steering wheel. I replaced the front brakes with AP six pots and floating 368mm discs, not only were they waaaay more powerful, but more importantly a lot lighter. The difference they made to the way the car stopped, steered and rode was truly staggering.
The standard cast iron single pot sliding caliper (and its carrier) weighed the proverbial ton, likewise BMW's hopeless attempt at budget floating discs.
The end result was a car that's steering was lighter and waaaay more responsive (enabling a much quicker turn in) and a massive difference in ride quality, previously the car's suspension hammered over cat's eyes, with the new front brakes it rode over them as if it had considerably softer springs and compression damping.
It's a given the brakes were superb, RS29's 6 pots and 368mm discs were as close to the throwing the proverbial anchor out, and made the standard brakes look like the half-arsed, cheapskate affairs they were.
Always did like seeing what pvb wrote on RL yeah.

Interesting re 1M brakes. Had a very brief go in one and thought for once the BMW OE brakes seemed ok (rather low bar there to be fair) actually!

Clearly if the standard brakes are naff then there is mileage in PCCBs. But if the standard brakes are good as they are on the GT4 then the case is much weaker. This article http://www.caranddriver.com/features/the-power-to-... makes it very clear that on the 911 at least there is absolutely nothing to be gained in either stopping distance or fade resistance with many repeated stops from 100mph

This is a for sale values thread, not a brake or BMW bloody thread ;-)

GT4 brakes are amazing, free to choose what pad (rs29 for the track day people) and not £20k to replace after 30 track days.

Saving 9 or so lbs on PCCB and saying it transforms the car is, well daft.

Rotating mass is key here and if you want faster turn in bullst spouted :-p (a disk will not offer this due to the gyroscopic effect and how close a disk is to the hub over a wheel) fit some forged wheels for the £5k you save not having PCCB, you can get some 16LB trick forged wheels for the GT4.

The GT4 wheel and tyre combo weigh over 200lbs and rotating mass with gyroscopic effect is key over a 420mm CCB vs a iron 380mm disk that close to the hub centre ! but if one can notice a 9lb change in unsprung weight then got race in F1 and get paid to do it :-)

i dont know, when i swapped from PCCB's to steels on mine, the steering and braking felt 'heavier', might have been a placebo effect but still felt a change

You need to check what you write sometimes. It's 9lbs per corner unsprung weight not 9lbs in total as you are suggesting above.

Slippydiff- yep i did see references to pvb's car from rl but not the thread you mentioned on another site, old school 911 with a Cup engine would be quite remarkable. Will look it up later tks.

So says the idiot who thinks a 5mm spacer bolted onto the front of car reduces understeer. And as ever, you've totally missed the point. You complete and utter moron.

More BS from PH's top troll. I suggest you crawl back under the stone you've recently been residing under. And stay there.
I wider track on the front will reduce understeer.

Unsprung weight will improve cornering.

/End.

I'm afraid Mr D is correct on both the effects of lightweight wheels vs PCCBs on steering and that widening the front track will reduce understeer (it effectively reduces front roll stiffness).

I agree it's a little O/T at the mo too so my contribution is that it was nice to see one out on the road near me yesterday evening...white with bonnet stripe trying to negotiate the rather large speed bumps in Lymm. eek

This is probably a little O/T too as I don't know if it's for sale. biggrin

Any chance of getting back on topic? This was a good thread once before all the experts joined in with the technical stuff. I feel for the OP as he was doing a sterling job until the thread was highjacked.
Can the teckies please start their own thread and leave us alone.
