Porsche Boxster Spyder as a weekend toy

I just can't fathom why anybody would order a new car without air con.
Its not like the weight saving is going to impact that driving experience at all!
If the Spyder was my daily driver then A/C would be a must. In all the years I have had the Spyder I have had only one journey where I needed it. That was 2 years ago in central London, roof off, 27*c and stuck in traffic. Its not like the weight saving is going to impact that driving experience at all!
For me, buying new it would have been hard to justify paying £1300 for something I would probably not need. In turn it would add to servicing costs, mpg costs and would go against the ethos of the car.
I cant imagine I would be able to tell the weight difference though. I think from memory the A/C saved 25kg???
As I said, I found what I wanted and am glad I bought the car I wanted not what other people told me I should have.

Good man! I really do like the look of the spyder, it looks like a proper sports car. Have you got any big trips planned with it?
I highly recommend you get it out into the Alps

With a company to run, two kids and wife who's as busy as me the trips are few and far between. I have a jaunt over to Le Mans 24 in June and that is it for this year. I really do like the look of the spyder, it looks like a proper sports car. Have you got any big trips planned with it?

Northern Italy and the Alps was on the cards last year for the wife's 40th but she voted for Mauritius in the end.

Had my first proper drive since picking it up New Year's Day today.
After all the rain i reckoned any road salt would have been washed off and the sun was trying to come out so off with the roof, well after a bit of fiddling anyway.
I like the rumbly exhaust note as I gently reversed off the drive and then trundled off down the hill to the main road where I pulled onto the main road just behind a RS3 which promptly lept off up the road like the proverbial scalded cat. The car isn't even warm yet and I am tempted to gun it to follow but I resist.
As I go further i gently up the pace and it settles really nicely into a series of sweeping bends - snickety gear change and nicely spaced peddles allow a bit of concurrent solid braking and blipping of the throttle to ease the lower gears in.
I up the pace on the straights and even at decent rate the wind in the cabin isn't uncomfortable just a gentle ruffling of the old folicals.
The odd car dawdling along is quickly dispatched and the unobtrusive exhaust becomes a little more noticeable when the revs get over about 3500 revs, i like that, i really dislike shouty exhausts. Its got plenty of torque so it's relaxing to make 'good progress'.
After about an hour i am back home, all in all i am rather smitten and yes it is rather special, plenty of go from the rorty engine, nice gearbox and steering, strong brakes and nice four square squat handling through every corner I drove through today.
I can't help but find a reason to pop back outside and admire the now rather dirt streaked white paintwork and listen to the engine clicking as it cools.
Overall am I pleased i bought it? Yes I am rather damn chuffed with my toy..
Here’s my post from Jan 2016, I have loved by Boxster Spyder as you can tell from my first driving experience all the way to more recent picnic I posted on the Spyder thread a few weeks ago. After 4 1/2 years and not many miles I am wrestling with head and heart, I bought it’s big brother a GT3 just over a year ago and I am choosing to take that out the garage instead.
Head says if you don’t use it move on, heart says my thoughts on the driving experience are just as valid now as they were then.
Bit torn really, any advice?

There is a pleasure to be had by driving cars that are different to each other. Spyder and GT3 are quite different in their characteristics. I’d keep both if you can. After 4 1/2 years and not many miles I am wrestling with head and heart, I bought it’s big brother a GT3 just over a year ago and I am choosing to take that out the garage instead.

For what its worth - I bought my Spyder as a daily and only car in 2011 - it was a year old and had 700 miles on the clock.
Its been used every day, in all weathers for every possible occasion you can think of. A blast to the coast, a club drive, the Waitrose run, a trip to the continent, to transport me and my bike to the velodrome 3-4 times a week etc etc
I bought it, as I do all my cars, without a care for “the right spec” according to all the Internet experts and garage queen owners and without care for depreciation. I drive all my cars - as hard as I can and have clocked up interstellar mileage over the years.
122,000 miles later - I would say, its the best, most fun, most reliable, best looking and fastest car, I have ever owned.
Life is for living, cars are for driving. Rubber is for burning. Worrying about values, mileage and depreciation are not for me.
Buy the car and enjoy.

I bought loads of cars the last 4 years and lost about £35k, now if I would have put 40k miles on the Spyder I would have lost only about 15k had a better time and have £20k left in my pocket.
So we are all mad not using them.
