Compare to the same folk driving a Cayman GTS - there's no comparison!

A great car the Cayman GTS, I had the privilege of a day in the passenger seat of a CGTS though the Alps last year and it was a very impressive car.

The pace, noise and ride are all excellent and the GTS interior with the carbon and red stitching is just a great place to be.

In fact one of my favorite cars that I've been in.

That bassy drone is likely to get very tiring on the ears...

It really depends how loud it really is - 911Rs exhaust would do my head in if was anything like as loud has his clip sounds. I still think the non-sports exhaust base 718 sounds absolutely fine to me, but the pops and crackles spoil both on the youtube clips.

Those sounds for both the S (and non-S) are truly awful to my ear, what a horrendous bassy racket. The Cayman S clip posted is nail on head - that's how a car like that should sound

So you think that sounds bad yeh ?

To me it sounds like a mix of air cooled and a scooby, i really hope it sounds as good as this!
I like it.

I need to hear it in person.

From the samples I prefer it to the 991.2's sound.

Its all subjective and there is no right or wrong, but seriously? The 991.2 is more muffled than its predecessor for obvious reasons, but its still a 6!

In my head I have a mental picture of two of it's original six conrods flapping around in smashed up cylinder liners, with the pistons and remains of the valve timing kit flailing round in fresh air, as the engine leaves the last of it's vital fluids in a trail on the ground. Awful.

Or perhaps it's an old Land Rover that hasn't seen an MOT station in twenty years, some old 1930's GP car, or an extremely unwell Subaru. Either way, it does not sound like a Porsche. And those stupid farty popping sounds would get right on my tits too.

What a shame.

That pops and crackle stuff is typically heard on engines that don't really sound that great. Who needs such contrived stuff on a Mezger?

I think it's a simple fact that a lot of people like them - or why else would anyone spec PSE, which is one of the most popular options.

I reckon most buyers are blind to the contrived and the fake. But what is real?

The distinction continues to blur.

My Cayman GTS has the best sound of any car I have owned and that includes a Ferrari 355 with a Capristo and the sports exhaust I had fitted to my GT3 RS

Agreed - I was flamed for describing PSE as an engineering abortion. But, that said things are getting blurred at the edges. Piping induction noise into the cabin may not be quite as fake as amplifying and filtering that noise and feeding into to cabin via the speaker system - but it's getting close, and I'm sure if you did it well enough you couldn't tell the difference.

Porsche have been manufacturing noise for a long time to some degree. Whether it be mechanical, electronic, fuel or by many other ways.

I think this is why racing cars give me wood. Its pure. Its just the sound of power. No fripperies.

But the cynical programming of the ecu to over fuel on a closing throttle to ape a carburettor makes me wince.

Agreed. But remember racers don't give a damn what the car sounds like - if it's a tenth of a second quicker it can sound like a bag of nails or a hoover - the stop watch is the only arbiter of quality.

Oh, of course, yes. And of course the truth is that a good racing car is truly horrible to drive.

And yet, many racing cars sound incredible. Why is that? Because they are sans compromise.

Fartastic.

Never thought our beloved Porsche would produce something that takes the German name for it 'auspuff' and somehow manages to make that bit of the car sound like how its name sounds in English.

Both models sound worse and more chav than my Megane. Oh well at least if I buy that 987.2 Cayman I keep promising myself it should hold its value for a long time to come.

Its all about low speed noise mate, I think the 718 will give more smiles per mile. Even at a slow cruise that flat 4 is making a nice burble and that's just the base car.

991.2 probably better when I am ragging its arse right on my way to a short prison stretch.
