But the cynical programming of the ecu to over fuel on a closing throttle to ape a carburettor makes me wince.
Agreed. It sounds silly, and now we have a turbo-4 with those sounds. The new things sounds like a lawn mower.

You really think that sounds good?

It sounds like a 2 cyl generator!

A lawnmower generally has one cylinder, hence the comment!

Thought sit-ons were generally twins. Then again maybe mowers haven't escaped downsizing either.

Domestic ones are generally singles, twins are generally for professionals. No turbos yet as far as I'm aware....

5 straight posts on lawnmower engines..seems that interest in the 718 is err, muted, on PH at least?

In my head I have a mental picture of two of it's original six conrods flapping around in smashed up cylinder liners, with the pistons and remains of the valve timing kit flailing round in fresh air, as the engine leaves the last of it's vital fluids in a trail on the ground. Awful.

Or perhaps it's an old Land Rover that hasn't seen an MOT station in twenty years, some old 1930's GP car, or an extremely unwell Subaru. Either way, it does not sound like a Porsche. And those stupid farty popping sounds would get right on my tits too.

What a shame.
Exactly this. Truly awful.

...made me laugh. Thanks.

Perhaps we could post clips of our lawnmowers at various throttle openings for a comparison to the 718?

If I really wanted something that sounds like a Harley on a coastal road cruise.....

I'd buy a Harley.....

All comments/thoughts on mid-life crises to be ignored. Besides mid-life was a long time ago.........

Mind you if you want a cracking sound you still can't beat a Kawasaki triple, two stroke......

ah yes, it sounds like a six pot four stroke.....(ish)waveysmile

Not a fan of the 718 noise compared to previous Porsche 6 cyl offerings, but it sounds okay for a F4.

I love PSE on my BGTS. Is it over the top with its pops and bangs? Yes, but it's fun and it makes me smile smile And I defy anyone to drive through the Alps in one and not enjoy the sound, it's a life affirming experience and I couldn't care less if it's a bit contrived. And you can still get the non-exhaust sounds at low revs by switching off PSE. At high revs when the valves open whatever, you can still get the mechanical and induction noise, it's just the balance is biased towards exhaust. Would be nice to have an option to have the PSE off off so tha they were closed at high revs just for the added variety.

Anyway, my 993 has a more cultured and toned down sound if I want it (even with the OEM motorsound airbox and a Carnewal exhaust), so I guess I'm lucky to have the best of both worlds.

Went to geneva to have a look at 718 (which i have ordered) demo models due in dealers in next 2 or 3 weeks.the Design when seen in the flesh, looks terrific.much more aggresive front end and the new led headlights are excellent. Also the new back end spoiler/ badge is a nice design touch with the letters sloping in underneath the bottom of spoiler. In all a much more modern and muscular look to it.The dashboard as well with the new vents and chrono clock position look very nice.Pse will not be on uk cars until after july, and aftermarket pse is not coming until november. If you look on german configurator you cam see new wheels and other items which will be coming here in next couple of months.First journo drives are in majorca in mid april at official launch.sure this car is a leap forwrd in all areas.looked at Ftypes, Aston vantage recently but going to wait till august and get 718s with sports exhaust.Cant think of anything in this class or price range that will get anywhere close.

Debatable, and may be down to personal preference, but it won't be in the throttle response department for me at least!

Doesn't the 718S he's ordered have the variable vane turbo?

I'm in the wait and see camp, or rather wait and test drive.

On the (admittedly fairly significant) assumption that the 718S is not going to be given better throttle response than the 991.2 models, it's not looking good given what I experienced on my 991.2 C2S test drive.

Least bad option in terms of lag/throttle sounds like it's going to be the vanilla 991.2 Carrera as from memory it's running smaller turbos than the S version.

Still don't understand why Porsche didn't go the way of the 488 with some torque curve engineering, seems a no brainer.

I ordered a boxster spyder last August but was not high enough up the waiting list to be allocated a car. So where do you go from there.when told this news in January the 718 details were already out by then.In true Porsche fashion even now with 718 deliveries starting in June for the early cars, year old boxster gts etc are the same money as ordering new 718. so, bit of a quandry..Can see the point on wait and test drive,on pure speed terms pdk's boxster s with launch control is as fast as gt4. £65,000 on new 718 or £62000 on 981 gts? Hhmmm. Makes £20,000 overs on a spyder seem hard to swallow. In regards to the sound question,a difficult one,so many opinions but nobody on this forum has heard it for real yet.

Leave it till Autumn and buy a GTS (assuming you are after a cab) as prices show the seasonal dip. As the last of the na cars if you buy the right spec they will hold up well as not many about.....a good package at the money.
