I'm sure VWs board at certain points will have engaged with the Porsche board. I'm am sure they didn't just leave this to them.I think we are already seeing hints of styling cues from the Group ie the tale pipes on the 991.2. Its subtle but its already coming through.
I thought PR wise the press release of the new Cayman 718, followed a day later by the cheaper/quicker TT was a bad move.
As you say for the next round of porsches there is very likely more sharing of parts etc.
For me there is a real risk that the brands are losing there hard earned reputations.

Do you mean sharing Porsche parts (the first Boxster was a bit of a parts bin special) or sharing VAG parts (the SUVs have a great deal of VW/Audi in them)? IIRC there's also a lot of sharing between Lamborghini and Audi R8. Some people thought the 4-pot Boxster might have been downsized and released as a VW, like the old VW 914 and Porsche 916. Didn't happen.
Loads of 981s at and around Goodwood today. Brilliant cars.

The new PCM is a rather obvious "re-skin" of the nav software in all other VAG cars and some of the switchgear is shared with other models but other than that there aren't many shared parts in the 982 platform. I do expect this to change drastically in the next few years. The new Bentayga has a Porsche steering wheel for example and I'm sure it will share a lot of parts with the next Cayenne, as will the next 911 and Continental GT, next Cayman and R6, etc.

It would be nice if you could spec some 'purist' options in the configurator when optioning up a 911/Cayman/Boxster.
Things like the shorter-ratio 6-speed, genuine weight savings (doors, bonnet/boot, wheels and beyond), even a different engine.
Make the options expensive if you have to, keep the unique styling for the limited run specials by all means.
This way the investors can collect the flashy motor show starlets, and drivers who want a bit more edge in a standard looking package get what they want too.
Why not, Porsche?

Keller probably too expensive. Cayman is probably 50kg or more overweight because it shares boxster platform, but too expensive too reengineer.

firstly, who on earth buy a pdk , I know I love manuals, but tbh I thought the gearbox was horrible .

I don't want to start the pdk vs manual argy bargy again, and perfectly understand why some prefer manual, but don't understand the word "horrible" unless you left it in auto.
I know its a matter of taste, but I used it as an auto - just to see, and used it as a manual and did give some beans. Sadly though, auto was not pleasant at all , and I understand that. Why have a sports car that you can change gear with by using paddles - fantastic on the track, yet a status symbol on the road.
its not a Porsche moan, i'm just not a fan, and I knew that before I went out.
But as I want to order a 718 Cayman ,it was just the general feel I was interested in.
def needs the sports exhaust. I cannot stress enough how this would be the 1st box ticked.
even worse, my wife loved the Boxster and cannot understand how I can even entertain a Cayman - esp if I sell my 430 spider....lol

I had a go in the base 718 today whilst collecting my 981 GTS. It wasn't a bad drive by any means - but for me the overriding feeling was that without the badges I don't know if I'd have known it was a Porsche from the drive alone. I just didn't have any theatre for a car of that type and price. Granted it didn't have the sports exhaust so that would've probably helped. The steering was great and the interior is a lovely place to be (I love the new steering wheel design) but it just didn't do it for me.
